The First ‘Stree’ in Indian Cinema
While “Stree 2” is making headlines in 2024, did you know that the title “Stree” was first used 63 years ago in Indian cinema? The earliest instance of this title was in a Hindi film released in 1961, directed by the legendary filmmaker V. Shantaram. V. Shantaram is best known to Hindi cinema audiences for his iconic film “Do Aankhen Barah Haath,” in which he not only directed but also played the lead role. The 1961 “Stree” was a color film, with Sandhya playing the female lead, while Rajshree and Mumtaz appeared in significant roles.
This fantasy film drew inspiration from Kalidasa’s play “Abhijnanasakuntalam.” The music was composed by C. Ramchandra, with songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mahendra Kapoor. Notably, this film was India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 34th Academy Awards, although the award ultimately went to the Swedish film “Through a Glass Darkly.”
National Award-Winning Oriya Film
Seven years later, in 1968, the title “Stree” appeared again, this time in an Oriya language film directed by Gour Prasad Ghose. The movie, featuring Parbati Ghose in the lead role, won the President’s Silver Medal for Best Oriya Film, adding another layer of prestige to the title’s history.
