Toxic Takes Over IMAX From The Odyssey

The battle for India’s premium cinema screens has taken an interesting turn. Yash’s Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups has taken over IMAX shows across India, bringing an end to the reported 40-day IMAX run of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. The development is significant because Nolan’s epic had continued to attract audiences even several weeks after its theatrical release.

According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, The Odyssey had collected around Rs. 90 crore from 34 IMAX screens in India and was still recording an impressive 43% occupancy on its 40th day. Despite that sustained performance, Toxic has now taken over the IMAX shows.

The Odyssey Had a Remarkable IMAX Run

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has enjoyed an unusually strong theatrical run in India. The film not only attracted audiences during its opening weeks but also continued to perform strongly on premium IMAX screens.

Earlier reports had highlighted the film’s extraordinary IMAX contribution. By August 10, The Odyssey had reportedly collected Rs. 74.21 crore from IMAX alone by Day 24, while its India total had reached Rs. 166.89 crore at that stage.

The film subsequently became the highest-grossing IMAX release in India, according to exhibitors cited by Bollywood Hungama. Its performance demonstrated that audiences were willing to return to theatres specifically for the large-format experience associated with Nolan’s filmmaking.

Why Did The Odyssey Lose IMAX Shows?

The answer appears to be the arrival of Toxic. Yash’s film opened in theatres on August 26 and was released in IMAX as well. According to reports, the distributors of Toxic pushed for IMAX shows across India because of the film’s substantial pre-release buzz and expected demand.

For exhibitors, premium screens have limited availability. When a major new release arrives with strong demand, existing films can lose premium-format shows even if they are still performing well.

That appears to be what has happened with The Odyssey.

Yash’s Toxic Enters the Premium Screen Battle

Toxic is Yash’s first major theatrical release after the blockbuster KGF: Chapter 2, and expectations around the film have been enormous. Directed by Geetu Mohandas, the action gangster drama has been positioned as a large-scale cinematic experience.

The decision to give Toxic the entire IMAX show allocation in India highlights the confidence surrounding the film’s theatrical potential. Bollywood Hungama has described the movie as one of the major theatrical events of 2026, particularly because of its scale and Yash’s popularity.

The film’s IMAX takeover also creates an interesting contrast: a Hollywood epic directed by one of the world's biggest filmmakers has been replaced by a major Indian star vehicle at a time when premium-screen demand is becoming increasingly important.

A New Test for Toxic

While taking over IMAX screens is a major opportunity, it also raises expectations for Toxic. Premium screens come with higher ticket prices and audiences generally expect a visually impressive theatrical experience in return.

Yash now has the advantage of maximum visibility on one of the most sought-after premium formats. The bigger question is whether Toxic can sustain the momentum generated by its opening and deliver the kind of long theatrical run that The Odyssey managed.

For The Odyssey, being removed from IMAX after around 40 days despite strong occupancy is itself a testament to its extraordinary run. For Toxic, meanwhile, taking over those screens marks the beginning of a potentially huge box-office chapter.

With two very different cinematic spectacles competing for audience attention, the IMAX baton has officially passed from Nolan’s The Odyssey to Yash’s Toxic.
