The much-awaited sequel to the 2006 comedy Malamaal Weekly is heading for a major change behind the camera. Filmmaker Priyadarshan, who directed the original film, has confirmed that he will not be returning to direct its second instalment.
The director has also made it clear that he does not intend to work on sequels anymore. His decision comes as the makers prepare to take the popular comedy franchise forward with a new director and a fresh storyline.
Speaking to Variety India, Priyadarshan confirmed his exit, saying, "I am not doing it. I have decided not to do any sequel."
His statement puts an end to speculation about his involvement in Malamaal Weekly 2 and marks a significant change for a film that originally became popular under his direction.
Amit Joshi to Direct Malamaal Weekly 2
With Priyadarshan stepping away, filmmaker Amit Joshi has reportedly been brought on board to direct the sequel. Joshi previously co-directed Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon's romantic comedy Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya.
He has also worked as a writer on films such as Trapped, Panga and India Lockdown. His experience with comedy and unconventional storytelling is expected to help the makers give the franchise a fresh direction.
The sequel is reportedly being developed with a new storyline while retaining the small-town setting and comic spirit that made the original film memorable.
However, the challenge for the new director will be to recreate the humour and entertaining chaos associated with Priyadarshan's 2006 film while offering something different to today's audiences.
Is Riteish Deshmukh Also Out of the Sequel?
Priyadarshan's exit is not the only casting development surrounding Malamaal Weekly 2. Reports have also suggested that actor Riteish Deshmukh may not be part of the sequel.
However, his involvement remains uncertain, and there has been no definitive confirmation of his exit in the TeluguOne report.
Meanwhile, Paresh Rawal has confirmed his participation in the upcoming film. His return could provide a connection to the original comedy, in which he played an important role alongside Riteish Deshmukh, Om Puri, Rajpal Yadav, Arbaaz Khan and Asrani.
The makers are reportedly working towards finalising the cast, with further details expected to be announced.
What Made the Original Malamaal Weekly Special?
Released in 2006, Malamaal Weekly was written and directed by Priyadarshan. The comedy revolved around a village where the discovery of a winning lottery ticket creates a series of hilarious complications.
The story followed Lilaram, a lottery ticket seller who discovers that one of his customers has won a massive prize but has died before claiming it. Hoping to keep the money for himself, Lilaram gets caught in a web of lies and unexpected situations as other villagers become interested in the winning ticket.
The film featured Paresh Rawal, Om Puri, Riteish Deshmukh, Rajpal Yadav, Arbaaz Khan and Asrani. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, it became a commercial success and developed a lasting following among comedy fans.
Its humour, memorable characters and entertaining village setting helped establish it as one of the popular Hindi comedies of its time.
Can Malamaal Weekly 2 Recreate the Original's Magic?
The sequel now faces the challenge of living up to the popularity of the original film without its original director. Amit Joshi will have to balance nostalgia with a new approach to storytelling.
The makers are reportedly planning to retain the small-town atmosphere and comic misunderstandings while introducing a different plot.
With Paresh Rawal expected to return and a new creative team taking charge, Malamaal Weekly 2 has generated curiosity among fans of the original.
For now, Priyadarshan's decision to stay away from sequels has become the biggest talking point. Whether the new team can recreate the madness and laughter of the 2006 comedy remains to be seen.
