Sometimes a film finds its real audience only after arriving on OTT platforms. Something similar now seems to be happening with Dhanush’s crime thriller “Kara”. The movie had a disappointing theatrical run earlier this year. but its recent OTT release has completely changed the conversation online.
Soon after “Kara” started streaming on Netflix. social media platforms were flooded with fresh reactions from viewers. Interestingly. many users are now claiming they skipped the film in theatres because of negative reviews and online criticism. Some even apologised directly to director Vignesh Raja and actor Dhanush after finally watching the movie at home.
OTT Audience Says The Film Deserved Better
“Kara” released in theatres on April 30 and initially received mixed reactions from audiences and critics. While some viewers praised Dhanush’s realistic performance and emotional scenes. others felt the screenplay became slow in the second half.
Because of these divided reviews. the film struggled to maintain strong momentum at the box office despite high expectations surrounding Dhanush and director Vignesh Raja’s collaboration.
However. things changed dramatically after the Netflix release on May 28. Many OTT viewers started posting that the film was much better than they had expected. Some social media users even claimed that “fake negative reviews” created the wrong impression during the theatrical release period.
One viral reaction online read. “Sorry Mr D and Vignesh Raja. We believed the wrong reviews.” That comment quickly became one of the biggest talking points among Tamil cinema fans.
Dhanush’s Performance Is Receiving Fresh Praise
A major reason behind the renewed appreciation is Dhanush’s performance in the film. Several viewers praised how naturally the actor portrayed an emotionally broken man forced back into crime.
Many fans also appreciated the film’s grounded storytelling style and emotional moments involving family relationships. Especially after watching it without theatrical expectations. OTT audiences now appear more open to the film’s slower narrative approach.
At the same time. opinions still remain divided. Some viewers continue to feel the second half could have been tighter and more engaging.
Social Media Debate Around ‘Review Culture’
The situation has also restarted discussions around online review culture and “review bombing”. Many users argued that early negativity on social media often influences public opinion before audiences even watch a film themselves.
In recent years. several films and shows have faced similar situations where OTT releases later received better appreciation than their theatrical response.
For Dhanush fans. the OTT response to “Kara” has now become proof that some films need time and the right platform to connect with audiences. While the movie may not have become a box office blockbuster. its streaming release has definitely helped it find a second life online.
