Toxic OTT Release: Streaming Deal Falls From ₹200 Crore to ₹30 Crore

Yash’s Toxic is facing another setback as its OTT rights reportedly remain unsold after the film’s disappointing theatrical run. Platforms are now said to be offering around ₹30 crore

The Toxic OTT Release plans have reportedly run into fresh trouble after Yash's big-budget gangster drama struggled at the box office. The film's digital rights are yet to be finalised, while the reported valuation has fallen sharply from what the makers had initially expected.

According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the makers had earlier received an OTT offer of around ₹150 crore but were reportedly seeking more than ₹200 crore. The expectation was that a successful theatrical run would push the post-theatrical streaming value even higher. Following the film's disappointing performance, however, digital platforms are now reportedly offering as little as ₹30 crore for the rights across languages.

Toxic OTT Rights Yet to Be Sold

The biggest concern surrounding the Toxic OTT Release is that the digital deal reportedly remains incomplete.

A source cited by Bollywood Hungama claimed that the makers had an offer of ₹150 crore from a major streaming platform before release. However, the team reportedly wanted a figure above ₹200 crore.

The thinking was reportedly based on the expectation that Yash's film would perform strongly in theatres and that its box-office success would increase the value of the digital rights.

That prediction did not play out as expected.

Following the film's theatrical performance, the reported offers have dropped significantly. Bollywood Hungama claims that some digital players are now offering around ₹30 crore for the post-theatrical streaming rights covering all languages.

From ₹200 Crore Expectation to ₹30 Crore Offer

The reported difference is substantial.

The makers were reportedly looking for more than ₹200 crore, while an earlier offer was said to be around ₹150 crore. The latest reports suggest that the highest current offer may be only around ₹30 crore.

Indian Express also reported the same development, noting that the film's digital rights remain unsold and that the reported ₹30 crore offer represents a major fall from the pre-release valuation.

Importantly, ₹30 crore is a reported offer, not a confirmed final OTT deal. No official announcement has been made confirming that a platform has acquired the rights for that amount.

Why the OTT Value Fell

The theatrical performance appears to be the main reason behind the change in valuation.

Toxic opened strongly but reportedly struggled after its initial release because of negative word of mouth. The film was expected to become one of Yash's biggest theatrical releases following the success of KGF: Chapter 2, but its performance did not sustain the early expectations.

For streaming platforms, theatrical performance can influence the commercial value of a film. A strong theatrical run can create additional demand for an OTT premiere, while a disappointing cinema run can reduce the urgency around acquiring expensive digital rights.

Makers May Prepare a New OTT Cut

The Toxic OTT Release could also involve a different version of the film.

According to the reports, the makers are considering a fresh edit specifically for digital streaming. The idea is reportedly to make the film more suitable for an OTT audience and potentially improve its commercial value.

The move is also linked to the film's adult-oriented storytelling. The makers are reportedly discussing how a new digital cut could help recover some of the losses following the theatrical performance.

This does not mean that a new OTT version has been officially confirmed. Discussions are reportedly underway.

Toxic's Theatrical Performance

Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups was released in cinemas on August 26. Directed by Geetu Mohandas, the film features Yash in the lead role alongside Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Tara Sutaria, Huma Qureshi and Rukmini Vasanth.

The film reportedly had a production budget in the region of ₹500 crore, although reported budget figures vary. Its opening was strong, but collections declined considerably during the subsequent days. Indian Express reported an estimated India net collection of around ₹243.40 crore at the time of its September 7 update.

The exact final box-office figure will depend on the eventual theatrical run and the source used for tracking.

What About Zee5?

Several reports have previously linked Toxic with Zee5.

Before the film's release, reports claimed that Zee5 had acquired its digital and satellite rights in a deal worth around ₹235 crore. However, that deal was never officially confirmed by the makers, and later reports about the rights being unsold have created confusion around the film's actual OTT arrangement.

Therefore, it would be premature to state that Zee5 has officially acquired the streaming rights or that the film will definitely premiere there.

When Will Toxic Release on OTT?

There is currently no officially announced OTT release date for Toxic.

The streaming platform has also not been officially confirmed through an announcement from the makers. The reported negotiations over the digital rights need to be resolved before a firm OTT premiere date can be announced.

For now, audiences will have to wait for an official update from the production team or streaming platform.

Toxic OTT Release Faces an Uncertain Road Ahead

The latest Toxic OTT Release reports point to a significant change in the film's post-theatrical business. An earlier expectation of more than ₹200 crore for digital rights has reportedly fallen to offers around ₹30 crore after the film's disappointing theatrical performance.

The reported figures should not be treated as a completed deal, since the rights are said to remain unsold. The makers are reportedly exploring a new OTT cut and other options to improve the film's digital value.

With no official streaming platform or release date confirmed yet, the next major update will be the final OTT deal for Yash's Toxic.
