Vishal Rana Explains Why Tu Hai Meri Kiran Avoids a Darr Remix

Producer Vishal Rana says Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal’s upcoming psychological thriller Tu Hai Meri Kiran is their answer to the growing popularity of obsession-themed films. He also explains why the makers chose not to remix Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic Darr song and reveals why they are sticking to the October 23, 2026 release date despite a crowded box-office weekend.

Producer Vishal Rana has opened up about the creative decisions behind Tu Hai Meri Kiran, the upcoming psychological thriller starring Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Rana explained why the film takes a different approach to the theme of obsessive love and why the makers deliberately avoided remixing the iconic song associated with Shah Rukh Khan’s 1993 film Darr.

The film is scheduled to arrive in theatres on October 23, 2026. With its story centred on an obsessive relationship, the project explores the darker side of attraction and the point at which love can turn into fear and control.

Why Vishal Rana Did Not Remix Shah Rukh Khan’s Darr Song

The title Tu Hai Meri Kiran immediately recalls the famous song from Darr, in which Shah Rukh Khan played Rahul, an obsessive lover fixated on Kiran, played by Juhi Chawla. Given the song’s lasting popularity, audiences might have expected the new film to feature a recreated version of the classic track.

However, Rana confirmed that the makers never intended to acquire the song rights or create a remix. He explained that the new film has no direct connection with Darr and that he did not want audiences to compare the two projects simply because they share a familiar phrase.

According to the producer, the title itself was enough to communicate the film’s central theme. The makers wanted to use its recall value without creating an impression that the new project was a sequel, spin-off or modern adaptation of the Shah Rukh Khan classic.

Rana also clarified that the film is an independent story with its own characters and narrative. The similarity in the title is intended to evoke the idea of obsession rather than establish a direct relationship between the two movies.

How the Film Got Its Title

Rana revealed that the team initially considered several names for the project, including Darr, because the story revolves around an obsessive individual. The final title, however, emerged from an informal conversation involving Zaheer Iqbal.

According to Rana, Zaheer had narrated the film's story to a friend, who suggested the name Tu Hai Meri Kiran. The title immediately appealed to the team because it captured the film's central idea while carrying a familiar cultural association.

The makers were initially unsure whether the title would be available, given its connection to such a well-known Bollywood song. After approaching the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA), they discovered that the title had not been registered by anyone.

The team subsequently settled on the name, believing that its familiarity would attract attention while still allowing the film to establish its own identity.

Why Tu Hai Meri Kiran Is Being Called an Answer to Obsession

Rana described Tu Hai Meri Kiran as the team's answer to the growing popularity of films dealing with dark relationships and obsessive love. He said he was drawn to the script because it offered something different from the kinds of stories frequently made in Indian cinema.

The producer also pointed to the success of Obsession (2026), saying that its performance reinforced his belief that audiences were becoming more interested in stories exploring the disturbing side of relationships.

He explained that Obsession arrived while his film was completing post-production, making the timing appear particularly favourable. Rana hopes viewers will respond to the twists and psychological tension in Tu Hai Meri Kiran.

The film stars Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal in an unusual on-screen dynamic. Although the actors are married in real life, they play characters whose relationship develops into something far darker than a conventional romance.

Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal's Unusual Casting

Rana said Sonakshi was approached first because the team believed she suited the role of Kiran. Finding the right actor to play opposite her proved more challenging, as the male character needed to possess an unsettling intensity.

After meeting Zaheer, Rana suggested that he audition for the role. His performance impressed both the producer and director Karan Rawal, who felt that he brought the necessary shades of menace to the character.

The casting decision offered an opportunity to present the real-life couple in a completely different light. Instead of portraying a romantic partnership, the film places them on opposing sides of a disturbing psychological conflict.

Why the October 23 Release Date Is Staying

Tu Hai Meri Kiran is arriving on October 23 alongside several other films. Rana admitted that the release calendar became increasingly crowded after the date was initially announced, but the team decided against postponing the film.

He explained that the promotional campaign was already underway and moving the release could have delayed the project until the following year. The makers also believe the film can find an audience if its content connects with viewers.

Rana said the team is targeting approximately 500 screens and around 1,500 shows. He believes strong audience reactions and word of mouth can help a film secure additional screenings, even when its initial release footprint is limited.

With its October 23 release approaching, Tu Hai Meri Kiran will attempt to stand out through its psychological storyline, unexpected casting and exploration of obsessive love—without relying on a remix of the classic song that inspired its title.
