Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal Film Faces Release Trouble Over ₹8.85 Crore Dispute

Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal’s upcoming film Tu Hai Meri Kiran has hit a legal roadblock after the Bombay High Court made its commercial release conditional on securing a co-producer’s ₹8.85 crore investment, along with 15% annual interest. Originally scheduled to release in theatres on October 23, 2026, the film’s future now depends on compliance with the court’s directions.

Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal’s upcoming film Tu Hai Meri Kiran has run into a major legal challenge just days before its scheduled theatrical release. The Bombay High Court has directed the film’s producer, Echelon Productions, to secure the investment made by co-producer AND Movie Products LLP before the movie can be commercially released.

The court’s order, passed on October 19, 2026, concerns an investment of ₹8.85 crore, along with annual interest of 15%. The film was scheduled to arrive in cinemas on October 23, but its commercial release cannot proceed unless the conditions imposed by the court are met.

The development has put the spotlight on the financial and contractual responsibilities involved in film production, particularly when multiple production partners contribute substantial amounts to a project.

Why Has the Bombay High Court Intervened?

The dispute centres on a co-production agreement signed between Echelon Productions and AND Movie Products LLP on March 27, 2024. Under the agreement, both parties were expected to contribute ₹7.50 crore each, plus GST, towards a film budget of ₹15 crore, plus GST.

AND Movie Products LLP told the court that it had invested ₹8.85 crore between March 2024 and January 2025. The company alleged that the amount was not repaid within the agreed contractual timeline.

According to the agreement, Echelon Productions was required to repay the investment within 13 months of signing the contract or three weeks before the film’s first release, whichever came earlier.

The court held that the repayment deadline had expired on April 27, 2025. It also observed that announcing a later release date could not automatically extend the original repayment deadline.

₹8.85 Crore Deposit With 15% Annual Interest

The High Court directed Echelon Productions to deposit ₹8.85 crore, along with 15% annual interest calculated from the respective investment dates, within three working days of the order.

The amount is intended to protect the co-producer’s financial interests while the broader dispute is resolved. The court specified that the deposited money would remain secured and could not be withdrawn without approval from the court or an arbitral tribunal.

If Echelon fails to comply with the directions, the film cannot be commercially exploited. This condition makes the deposit crucial to determining whether the movie can proceed with its planned release.

The court has not permanently banned the film. Instead, it has made commercial release conditional on protecting the co-producer’s investment.

Dishonoured Cheque Added to the Dispute Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal’s Film

The disagreement reportedly intensified after a cheque for ₹7.50 crore issued by Echelon Productions through Vishal Rana was dishonoured in January 2026.

AND Movie Products LLP subsequently approached the Bombay High Court seeking interim protection of its contractual and financial rights after the film’s October release was announced.

Echelon argued that repayment depended on the film’s earnings and pointed to the co-producer’s participation in promotional activities on Instagram. However, the court held that promotional involvement did not waive the repayment obligation.

It also emphasised the contractual requirement for the co-producer’s consent before agreements involving third-party commercial exploitation could be signed.

Court Orders Transparency in Film Revenue and Agreements

Alongside the financial deposit, the court issued additional directions concerning the film’s commercial arrangements.

Echelon Productions must disclose existing and proposed exploitation agreements, maintain film revenue in a separate designated account and provide regular accounts. The company must also obtain AND Movie Products LLP’s contractual consent before entering into exploitation agreements.

The court further directed the producer to correct or withdraw publicity credits that do not comply with the agreed producer-credit arrangements.

These measures are intended to protect the co-producer’s contractual rights and improve transparency around the film’s financial dealings.

Will Tu Hai Meri Kiran Release on October 23?

The film’s original theatrical release date was October 23, 2026. However, the High Court’s order means that the planned release depends on whether Echelon Productions complies with the financial security requirements.

The court declined to put its judgment on hold and did not direct Vishal Rana to personally deposit the money at this stage. The question of final liability is expected to be addressed through arbitration.

For Sonakshi Sinha and Zaheer Iqbal, the legal dispute has created uncertainty around their film’s release plans. The immediate focus remains on the producer’s compliance with the court’s directions.

The case also serves as a reminder that commercial film releases depend not only on star power and publicity but also on contractual commitments, financial transparency and the protection of investors’ rights.
