Box Office India lists its India gross at around ₹80.12 crore and classifies it as an All Time Blockbuster. Its India net collection was approximately ₹46.87 crore.
Bollywood Hungama's figures put the film's India net collection at ₹46.87 crore, with an India gross of ₹65.1 crore and overseas gross of ₹25.99 crore, giving a worldwide gross of approximately ₹91.09 crore under that database's methodology.
Different trade databases can report historical collections differently because of variations in accounting methods, territories and inflation-era reporting. What remains undisputed is the film's position as the top Hindi grosser of 1998.
It finished ahead of other successful releases of that year, including Soldier, Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya.
Karan Johar Created More Than Just a Love Story
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was also significant because it marked Karan Johar's debut as a director.
The film established several elements that would become closely associated with Johar's filmmaking style: friendship-driven romance, emotional family relationships, glamorous locations, memorable music and characters whose personal relationships drive the story.
