Bollywood Mascot: Mumbai, September 6, 2024 – The Indian stock market has been grappling with a significant downturn over the past three days, witnessing a decline of over 1,400 points. This drop comes amid a backdrop of various factors, including inflation data from the U.S. and China, but there are additional critical elements contributing to this market instability.

Key Reasons for the Stock Market Decline

Profit-Taking and Market Valuation: The Indian stock market has experienced continuous growth for 14 days prior to the recent downturn. Analysts suggest that the market is currently overvalued, leading to profit-taking by investors. According to Seema Srivastava, Senior Equity Research Analyst at SMC Global Securities, the recent sell-off should be seen as a correction after excessive buying.

Depreciation of the Indian Rupee: The Indian Rupee has depreciated against the U.S. Dollar, trading around 84 INR per USD. This makes the Rupee one of the weakest currencies in Asia. The decline in the Rupee’s value is exerting additional pressure on the stock market.

Strengthening Dollar Index: Although the Dollar Index has seen a 2.12% decline over the past month and a 4% drop over the year, it is still experiencing a rebound. Currently trading around 101, the strengthening Dollar Index is contributing to market pressures.

Foreign Investment Outflows: There has been a noticeable trend of foreign investors withdrawing from the Indian stock market. On a recent Thursday, foreign investors pulled out INR 688.69 crore, adding to the market’s volatility. So far in September, foreign investors have withdrawn INR 11,882 crore.

U.S. Federal Reserve Meeting: Uncertainty surrounding the upcoming U.S. Federal Reserve meeting is another factor. Analysts, including Avinash Gorakhskkar from Profitmart Securities, speculate that if the Fed announces a 25 basis point rate cut, it may not be well received by the market. However, a 50 basis point cut could potentially rejuvenate market sentiment.

U.S. Job Data and Inflation Concerns: Recent data shows a decline in U.S. job opportunities to a three-and-a-half-year low, raising concerns about a potential slowdown in the American labor market. This has heightened fears of rising inflation, which could lead the Fed to reconsider rate cuts.

Market Impact and Current Status

On Friday, the stock market saw a severe decline, with the Sensex dropping by 1,055.88 points during trading hours. The Sensex opened at 82,171.08 points and fell to a low of 81,145.28 points. Over the past three days, the Sensex has declined by over 1,400 points. Similarly, the Nifty experienced a drop of over 300 points, currently trading at 24,858 points.

The recent decline in the stock market is a result of a combination of profit-taking, currency depreciation, foreign investment outflows, and concerns surrounding global economic conditions. Investors are advised to stay informed and consider these factors when making investment decisions.
