Bollywood Mascot: Fans of Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara finally have a reason to celebrate. Fifteen years after the release of the cult 2011 film, director Zoya Akhtar has confirmed that work on its much-awaited sequel is underway. The filmmaker, however, has made it clear that the project is still at a very early stage.
Speaking at the Monsoon Film Festival, Zoya revealed that the team is currently working on ideas for the next chapter. She indicated that the biggest challenge is finding a story that feels right for the characters at this stage of their lives.
The announcement comes at a perfect time as the original film completes 15 years. Released in 2011, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara followed three close friends—Arjun, Imraan and Kabir, played by Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol—who embark on a life-changing road trip across Spain.
The film also featured Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin and became one of the defining films for a generation of young Indian audiences. Its combination of friendship, travel, relationships and self-discovery helped it develop a strong cult following over the years.
Interestingly, excitement around a sequel had already increased after Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol reunited for a 2025 advertisement. The reunion looked so much like the original film that many fans initially thought they were watching a teaser for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara 2.
Zoya has now clarified that the sequel is genuinely being discussed, but she does not want to rush it simply because audiences want another film. The filmmaker wants to make sure the new story can successfully revisit the characters and their lives today.
This is particularly important because the original trio are no longer the same people they were in 2011. A sequel could explore what happened to Arjun, Imraan and Kabir after their unforgettable Spain trip and how their priorities, friendships and personal lives have changed with age.
There is also considerable curiosity about whether Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol will return. While their involvement would obviously be a major attraction, Zoya's latest comments do not amount to a formal confirmation of the complete cast yet.
The original Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was filmed across Spain, India and the United Kingdom and reportedly earned around ₹153 crore worldwide on a reported budget of ₹45 crore.
For now, the makers have not announced a release date, shooting schedule or final storyline for the sequel. The project remains in development, with the creative team still figuring out how to bring these much-loved characters back in a meaningful way.
But one thing is certain: ZNMD fans have finally received the confirmation they have been waiting for.
After 15 years, Arjun, Imraan and Kabir could be preparing for another journey—and this time, their biggest adventure may be about discovering where life has taken them.
