Vishal Bhardwaj Says Bollywood Support Is a Personal Choice

Vishal Bhardwaj says supporting a public issue is an individual choice after several Bollywood personalities joined a Gandhi Jayanti protest in Mumbai seeking democratic rights.

Filmmaker and composer Vishal Bhardwaj has shared his thoughts on whether Bollywood as an industry should come forward to support important public issues.

His comments came during a gathering at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park on Gandhi Jayanti, where activists, citizens and several prominent personalities came together for a protest centred on democratic rights.

According to The Times of India, Bhardwaj said that supporting such an issue should not be viewed as a collective responsibility of the entire film industry. Instead, he described it as a matter of individual choice.

‘It Is an Individual and Personal Matter’

Speaking at the protest, Vishal Bhardwaj made it clear that every Bollywood personality has the right to decide whether they want to publicly support an issue.

The filmmaker said that he had personally chosen to attend the gathering and extend his support. However, he added that other people might have a different view and could choose not to participate.

Bhardwaj explained that while he is part of Bollywood, he cannot speak on behalf of everyone associated with the industry. For him, the decision to support an issue depends on whether an individual personally believes that something happening around them is wrong.

Why Did Bollywood Stars Gather at Shivaji Park?

The gathering took place on Gandhi Jayanti at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park.

The protest was organised around concerns relating to democratic rights and called for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. The event brought together people from different age groups and backgrounds, including students, activists, families and senior citizens.

Several well-known personalities from the entertainment industry also attended, making the gathering notable in Mumbai’s cultural and political landscape.

Among the Bollywood names present were Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Vishal Bhardwaj, Rekha Bhardwaj, Hansal Mehta, Vishal Dadlani and Shashank Arora. Activist Tushar Gandhi was also present.

Shabana Azmi Speaks About Democracy

Veteran actress Shabana Azmi also spoke at the gathering and highlighted the importance of democratic rights.

She said the issue was fundamentally about democracy, citizens’ rights and their ability to raise their voices.

Azmi stressed that people are taught from childhood to vote, exercise their rights and speak up. According to her, if people feel that their fundamental rights are being taken away or manipulated, protesting becomes a natural response.

Her remarks reflected the larger purpose of the gathering and its focus on citizens’ participation in democratic processes.

Bollywood Personalities Have Different Opinions

Vishal Bhardwaj’s comments also highlight an important reality about Bollywood’s response to social and political issues.

While some actors and filmmakers regularly use their public platforms to express opinions, others prefer to stay away from political or social debates.

Bhardwaj suggested that there should not necessarily be an expectation that every Bollywood celebrity must participate simply because some members of the industry have chosen to do so.

For him, supporting an issue is ultimately a personal decision based on an individual’s own beliefs.

A Diverse Crowd at the Mumbai Protest

The Shivaji Park gathering was not limited to Bollywood personalities.

According to the report, the crowd included college students, senior citizens, Gen Z protesters, activists and families. Cultural figures also joined the event, creating a diverse gathering around the issue of democratic rights.

The presence of prominent film personalities attracted additional attention, but Bhardwaj’s comments emphasised that celebrity participation should not become the central measure of support for any public movement.

Vishal Bhardwaj Chooses to Make His Stand

By attending the gathering himself, Vishal Bhardwaj made his personal position clear while simultaneously maintaining that others should have the freedom to make their own choices.

His statement therefore carried two messages: an individual can publicly support an issue they strongly believe in, but they should not necessarily expect every other person to do the same.
