The Madras High Court has given the green light for the release of Chiyaan Vikram’s much-awaited film ‘Thangalaan,’ scheduled to hit theaters on August 15, 2024. The decision was made after the film’s producer, K.E. Gnanavel Raja, complied with a previous court order and deposited ₹1 crore into the account of the court-appointed official.

Court Lifts Stay on ‘Thangalaan’ Release

The Tamil film ‘Thangalaan’ was gearing up for its release when a sudden court order put a temporary halt to its plans. However, the court has now provided significant relief to the filmmakers by allowing the release to proceed as scheduled.

A bench comprising Justice G. Jayachandran and Justice C.V. Karthikeyan recorded the submission made by K.E. Gnanavel Raja’s lawyer, Niranjan Rajagopal, stating that the required sum had been deposited with the official assignee. With this confirmation, the court declared that there would be no further obstacles to the worldwide release of ‘Thangalaan’ on August 15, 2024.

The Backstory of Thangalaan

Thangalaan Release Confirmed After Madras High Court DecisionThe legal dispute surrounding ‘Thangalaan’ dates back to 2011 when K.E. Gnanavel Raja and businessman Arjun Lal Sundardas (now deceased) initiated a film project with an investment of ₹40 crore. According to the agreement, Sundar Das later contributed ₹12.85 crore but decided to back out due to financial constraints.

Investor Dues and Legal Complications

Arjun Lal Sundardas had substantial investments from various individuals in his real estate and finance companies. In 2014, when the High Court declared Sundar Das bankrupt, it ordered the official assignee to assess all his assets and liabilities to ensure that investors were paid their dues.

During the investigation, the official assignee discovered that Gnanavel Raja owed ₹10.35 crore to Sundar Das. In 2016, the official assignee filed an application in the High Court, seeking a directive for Gnanavel Raja to pay the amount with 18% interest from 2013. The division bench accepted the application in 2019 and ordered the production house to settle the dues with interest.

Impact on Other Films

Due to non-compliance with this order, the official assignee approached the High Court before the release of every film produced by Gnanavel Raja, including ‘Thangalaan.’ The court had issued orders to deposit ₹50 lakh to ₹1 crore before the release of these films. This year, the court also placed a hold on the release of another film produced by Studio Green, ‘Kanguva,’ starring Suriya, which is set to release in October 2024.
