There was a time when Shilpa Shirodkar was among the familiar faces of Hindi cinema. During the 1990s, the actress appeared in several popular films and worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. But just when her career was going strong, Shilpa made a decision that surprised many—she stepped away from Bollywood after marriage and moved abroad.
What happened next was far removed from the glamorous world of film sets. Shilpa settled overseas with her husband, explored an entirely different career, trained as a hairdresser and even worked in the corporate sector. Eventually, motherhood became another major turning point in her life.
Her journey from Bollywood actress to life abroad and eventually back to the entertainment industry is quite unlike the usual celebrity story.

Shilpa Shirodkar Left Bollywood After Marriage
Shilpa Shirodkar married banker Aparesh Ranjit in 2000. Following her marriage, she decided to step away from the film industry and moved abroad with her husband.
The couple initially lived in the Netherlands before eventually settling in New Zealand. At the time, Shilpa was already an established actress with several films to her credit.
Her last film appearance before her long break was Gaja Gamini, released in 2000. Rather than continuing to chase film opportunities, she chose to focus on her personal life and marriage.
From Bollywood Sets to a Hairdressing Course
Life away from Bollywood did not mean Shilpa simply stayed away from work. While living in New Zealand, she decided to keep herself occupied and enrolled in a hairdressing course.

The choice was not entirely unrelated to her previous profession. Shilpa had always been familiar with makeup, styling and other aspects of the beauty world because of her acting career.
After completing the course, she worked at a salon for around two months.
However, the job came with demanding working hours. Since she and her husband were newly married, Shilpa wanted more time together. Her husband had weekends off, while her salon job required her to work during those days.
Eventually, she decided that the routine was not suitable for her new married life and left the job.
Her Resume Had an Unusual Detail
Shilpa then made another unexpected move.

She asked her husband to prepare a resume for her so that she could apply for other jobs. According to her own account, she wanted the resume to be completely honest about her background.
She told him not to hide her education or her film career. Despite not having the conventional qualifications expected for corporate employment, Shilpa applied for jobs without expecting much.
What happened next reportedly surprised even her.
Two Job Offers Came on the Same Day
Shilpa revealed that she attended two interviews on the same day after applying for jobs.
To her surprise, she returned home with two appointment letters.
She eventually joined Dun & Bradstreet as a credit controller, beginning a completely different professional chapter away from films and television.
For an actress who had spent years surrounded by cameras, directors and film stars, working in a corporate environment was a major change.
Her experience also demonstrated that her identity outside Bollywood was not limited to being an actress.
Then Motherhood Changed Everything
Shilpa's life took another major turn after she became pregnant.
According to her account, she initially experienced symptoms such as tiredness and indigestion. After discovering that she was pregnant, her focus gradually shifted toward motherhood.
She has also spoken about facing health challenges during pregnancy, including requiring insulin injections and experiencing significant weight loss.
Eventually, she became a mother to her daughter Anushka, and family became the centre of her life.
For several years, Shilpa remained away from the entertainment industry while concentrating on raising her daughter and managing her family life.
A 13-Year Break From Acting
Shilpa's absence from the entertainment world lasted for around 13 years.
After leaving films in 2000, she eventually returned to acting in 2013, but not through Bollywood. Instead, she made her comeback on television with the Zee TV show Ek Mutthi Aasmaan.
The actress had previously said that acting remained her passion even during her years away from the camera. Her television comeback therefore marked the beginning of a new phase in her career.
She subsequently appeared in shows including Silsila Pyaar Ka and Savitri Devi College & Hospital.
Shilpa Shirodkar’s Bollywood Career in the 90s
Before taking her break, Shilpa had established herself as a recognisable actress of the 1990s.
She made her Bollywood debut in Bhrashtachar in 1989 and subsequently appeared in films such as Kishen Kanhaiya, Hum, Khuda Gawah, Aankhen, Pehchaan, Gopi Kishan and Mrityudand.
She worked alongside several leading actors and filmmakers during the peak of her career.

Her decision to leave the industry therefore came at a time when she was still receiving film opportunities.
From Bollywood Actress to Bigg Boss 18
Shilpa Shirodkar has continued to remain connected with audiences even after her acting comeback.
In 2024, she participated in Bigg Boss 18, introducing herself to a younger generation of viewers while also reminding longtime fans of her 1990s film career.
Her family background has also kept her in the public eye. Shilpa is the younger sister of former actress and Miss India Namrata Shirodkar, who is married to Telugu superstar Mahesh Babu.
Shilpa Shirodkar’s Story Is About Starting Over
Shilpa Shirodkar's journey is unusual because she experienced several completely different phases of life.
She went from being a successful Bollywood actress to becoming a wife living abroad, then trained as a hairdresser, worked in a corporate job, embraced motherhood and eventually returned to acting after a long break.

Rather than following a conventional Bollywood career path, she chose to prioritise different aspects of her life at different stages.
Today, her story remains a fascinating reminder that life after stardom can take an entirely unexpected direction—and sometimes, stepping away from the spotlight can become the beginning of a completely new chapter.
