Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming action entertainer King has created a major buzz in the film trade even before reaching theatres. The film has reportedly secured an overseas distribution deal worth ₹175 crore, making it one of the biggest international distribution agreements for an Indian film.
According to reports, Dubai-based Phars Films has acquired the overseas theatrical distribution rights for the film through a minimum guarantee (MG) deal. The reported agreement is significant because no Indian film had previously secured an overseas minimum guarantee of ₹100 crore, making this a potential record for the industry.
Directed by Siddharth Anand, King is scheduled to release worldwide on December 24, 2026.
Phars Films Acquires King’s Overseas Rights
According to a report by Pinkvilla, Phars Films has committed ₹175 crore for the international theatrical rights of King. The deal also marks a change in the film's overseas distribution arrangement, with Phars Films reportedly replacing Yash Raj Films (YRF), which was earlier expected to handle the international release.
YRF has previously distributed several major Shah Rukh Khan films overseas, including Pathaan, Jawan and Dunki. However, those films were handled through commission-based arrangements, unlike the reported minimum guarantee agreement for King.
Phars Films is an established name in international film distribution. The company previously acquired overseas rights for Prabhas' Saaho and has experience handling major Indian releases in international markets.
What Does the ₹175 Crore Minimum Guarantee Mean?
A minimum guarantee deal involves a distributor committing to pay an agreed amount for distribution rights, regardless of the film's eventual box-office performance. The distributor then seeks to recover its investment through theatrical earnings and other distribution arrangements.
For King, the reported ₹175 crore commitment reflects considerable confidence in Shah Rukh Khan's international box-office appeal.
However, the deal also creates a substantial commercial target. According to trade estimates cited in media reports, the film may need to earn around $48–50 million overseas to support the economics of the agreement.
This is a demanding benchmark, particularly because Pathaan and Jawan each collected approximately $49 million in international markets during their theatrical runs in 2023.
King Faces a Big Overseas Box Office Challenge
Shah Rukh Khan has a strong international audience, and his recent blockbusters have demonstrated the commercial importance of overseas markets for Hindi films.
Both Pathaan and Jawan performed exceptionally well internationally, helping establish new expectations for the actor's global theatrical reach. With King, the trade will be watching closely to see whether he can deliver another major overseas success.
The Christmas release window could provide an advantage because of the holiday season and increased cinema attendance. At the same time, the film is expected to face competition from major Hollywood releases, including Avengers: Doomsday, Dune: Part Three and Jumanji 3.
The availability of screens and audience response across key international territories will therefore play an important role in determining the film's performance.
Shah Rukh Khan Reunites With Siddharth Anand
King marks Shah Rukh Khan's second collaboration with director Siddharth Anand after their successful 2023 film Pathaan. The upcoming project is produced by Red Chillies Entertainment in association with Marflix Pictures.
The film features an ensemble cast including Deepika Padukone, Suhana Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Rani Mukerji, Jaideep Ahlawat, Raghav Juyal, Arshad Warsi and Saurabh Shukla.
Another major attraction is the on-screen pairing of Shah Rukh Khan and his daughter Suhana Khan. The project marks their first film together, following Suhana's acting debut in The Archies in 2023.
Can King Break Shah Rukh Khan’s Overseas Records?
The reported ₹175 crore distribution agreement has raised expectations around King well ahead of its release. While the deal demonstrates confidence in Shah Rukh Khan's international popularity, it also places considerable commercial pressure on the film.
The overseas box-office performance will be particularly important, with the film needing to compete with the international benchmarks set by Pathaan and Jawan.
For now, the reported deal has made King one of the most closely watched Bollywood releases of 2026. Whether it can translate the huge pre-release business into an equally impressive theatrical performance will become clear after its December 24 release.
