Shah Rukh Khan has reportedly ensured that a major business decision involving his upcoming film King does not affect his long-standing relationship with filmmaker Aditya Chopra. According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the superstar personally called the Yash Raj Films (YRF) chief before finalising the transfer of the film’s overseas distribution rights to Phars Films.

The development comes after Phars Films acquired the international distribution rights to King, which was initially expected to be distributed overseas by YRF. While the change marks an important shift in the film’s distribution strategy, the reported conversation between the two industry veterans suggests that the decision was handled on friendly terms.
Shah Rukh Khan Personally Spoke to Aditya Chopra
According to a source from Shah Rukh Khan’s team quoted by Bollywood Hungama, the actor decided to speak directly with Aditya Chopra and explain the situation before proceeding with the new arrangement.
The source highlighted the long-standing professional and personal association between the two. Shah Rukh Khan starred in Aditya Chopra’s directorial debut, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), which became one of Hindi cinema’s most iconic romantic films. The actor also worked in several other memorable YRF productions and shared a close bond with Aditya’s father, legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra.
The report states that the conversation between Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra was warm and positive. Aditya reportedly understood the actor’s point of view and agreed to let YRF step aside from the overseas distribution arrangement.
He also wished Shah Rukh Khan good luck for King and reportedly expressed excitement about watching the film during its Christmas release window.
Why Did King’s Overseas Distribution Move to Phars Films?
The change in distribution comes after Phars Films secured the international rights to King. The company’s reported acquisition has attracted considerable attention because Shah Rukh Khan’s films have frequently enjoyed a strong overseas distribution association with YRF.
According to reports, the overseas rights deal with Phars Films is valued at a minimum guarantee of Rs 175 crore. If confirmed, the reported amount would make it one of the biggest overseas distribution agreements for an Indian film.
The earlier arrangement involving YRF was reportedly based on a commission structure rather than a fixed minimum guarantee. The move to Phars Films therefore represents a significant change in the commercial arrangement surrounding the film.
However, the reported transfer should not be interpreted as a fallout between Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra. Bollywood Hungama’s report specifically describes the conversation as cordial, with Aditya giving his blessings to the project.
King Continues to Generate Massive Buzz
Directed by Siddharth Anand, King is among the most anticipated Bollywood releases of 2026. The film features Shah Rukh Khan alongside a prominent ensemble cast that includes Deepika Padukone, Suhana Khan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, Anil Kapoor and Jaideep Ahlawat.
The film is scheduled to release in theatres on December 24, 2026, making it a major Christmas release. Its international distribution, music rights and other business arrangements have already become important talking points in the entertainment industry.
Another notable development is the reported music rights agreement with T-Series, which has secured exclusive global commercial music rights for 50 years through an arrangement facilitated by Red Chillies Entertainment and Zee Music Company.
A Professional Decision Without Affecting Personal Equations
Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra share a relationship that goes back several decades. Their association began with Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge and continued through several successful collaborations.
The reported phone call before the distribution change highlights the importance of maintaining professional relationships even when business decisions evolve. For Shah Rukh Khan, personally informing Aditya Chopra appears to have been a way of respecting their history before moving forward with a new distribution partner.
With Phars Films now handling the overseas distribution, attention will remain on how King performs in international markets when it reaches cinemas this Christmas.
