Bollywood News: Salman Khan has long been one of Bollywood’s most talked-about bachelors, but there was a time when the superstar seriously considered marriage. His relationship with former actress and Miss India winner Sangeeta Bijlani came close to ending in a wedding, with invitations reportedly printed ahead of the ceremony. However, the couple eventually went their separate ways.
Years later, Salman spoke about the near-marriage during his appearance on Koffee With Karan, while Sangeeta also acknowledged the wedding-card reports during a television appearance. Their story continues to attract attention because it remains one of the most widely discussed chapters of Salman’s personal life.
1. Salman Khan Admitted That Wedding Cards Were Printed
During his 2013 appearance on Koffee With Karan, host Karan Johar asked Salman about his marriage plans. The actor recalled that there was a time when he genuinely wanted to get married, but things did not work out.
Salman confirmed that his relationship with Sangeeta had reached an advanced stage, revealing that even their wedding cards had been printed. His comments offered a rare glimpse into a relationship that had once appeared headed towards marriage.
The actor also spoke humorously about how relationships can change when the question of spending an entire lifetime together comes into the picture. Despite the preparations, the wedding never took place.
2. Their Relationship Lasted Several Years
Salman and Sangeeta were reportedly in a relationship from the late 1980s into the early 1990s. Both were establishing themselves in the entertainment industry during that period, and their relationship became a subject of considerable media interest.
Sangeeta, who won the Miss India title in 1980, had a successful modelling career before moving into films. Salman was also building his career in Hindi cinema, eventually becoming one of the industry's biggest stars.
Their relationship reportedly became serious enough for marriage plans to take shape. The wedding was said to have been scheduled for May 27, 1994, although the plans were ultimately abandoned.
3. Why Was the Wedding Called Off?
The exact circumstances surrounding their separation have been discussed in different interviews and media reports over the years. One frequently reported explanation involves actress Somy Ali, who was romantically linked to Salman during the 1990s.
Somy later claimed that Sangeeta discovered Salman’s involvement with her, leading to the breakdown of the wedding plans. These details are based on Somy’s account and should be understood as her version of events rather than an independently established account of everything that happened.
Salman himself made a brief, humorous reference to being caught during his Koffee With Karan appearance but did not provide a detailed explanation of the relationship’s end. The former couple has largely kept the full story of their separation private.
4. Sangeeta Bijlani Later Acknowledged the Wedding Reports
The subject resurfaced in December 2024 when Sangeeta appeared on Indian Idol 15. A contestant asked whether reports about her and Salman having wedding cards printed were true.
Sangeeta responded, “Haan woh jhoot toh nahi tha,” acknowledging that the reports were not false. However, she did not go into detail about why the wedding was called off.
Her response renewed public interest in the relationship and supported what Salman had said years earlier about how close they had come to marriage.
5. The Two Have Remained on Cordial Terms
Although their romantic relationship ended, Salman and Sangeeta have continued to be seen together at social gatherings over the years. Sangeeta has attended events connected to Salman, including his birthday celebrations, and their public interactions have generally appeared cordial.
Sangeeta later married former Indian cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin in 1996. Their marriage subsequently ended, while Salman continued his career in films without marrying.

The former couple’s continued friendship has often drawn attention, particularly because their relationship once came so close to marriage.
Salman Khan and Sangeeta Bijlani’s story remains a memorable chapter in Bollywood’s celebrity history. The printed wedding cards, Salman’s recollection on Koffee With Karan, and Sangeeta’s later acknowledgment all point to how serious their plans once were. While reports have offered explanations for the breakup, the complete circumstances remain largely private. Their cordial relationship today shows that a past romance does not necessarily prevent two people from maintaining a friendly bond.
