Rahul Bose Comedy in Udta Teer Wins Audience Praise

Rahul Bose is receiving an enthusiastic response for his unexpected comic performance in Udta Teer. In an exclusive interview, the actor reveals how he approached physical comedy, improvised scenes and why his funniest moments were deliberately kept out of the trailer.

Rahul Bose has surprised audiences with a completely different side of his acting in Udta Teer. Known for his intense performances and serious screen presence, the actor has stepped into the world of physical comedy with the Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan-starrer entertainer. His performance as M D Burman, the head of the Counter Terrorism Squad (CTS), has emerged as one of the film's talking points.

In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, Rahul discussed the audience's reaction, the challenges of performing comedy without dialogue and the creative decisions that helped make his character memorable. Reflecting on his transformation, he jokingly told director Akash A Kaushik that he had moved from the "glorious heights" of Mr & Mrs Iyer to becoming a slapstick comedian.

Why Akash A Kaushik Cast Rahul Bose

Rahul revealed that he initially questioned why the director wanted him for such an unconventional comic role. Akash reportedly explained that audiences would not expect an actor with Rahul's serious screen image to deliver outrageous comedy.

Rahul plays M D Burman, a seemingly disciplined officer who heads the Counter Terrorism Squad. His character slips into a coma after discovering that the protagonist, played by Ayushmann Khurrana, is a Pakistani spy. This unusual situation sets up several comic moments in the film, with Rahul expressing much of the humour through his eyes rather than dialogue.

The actor said the director believed that casting a recognised comedy performer would make audiences anticipate funny scenes. Rahul's serious screen persona, however, allowed the comedy to arrive as a surprise.

Akash also recalled seeing Rahul on a game show where contestants were questioned and the audience had to identify the most truthful person. Rahul won despite admitting that he had lied throughout the show. The director was impressed by his ability to communicate convincingly through his eyes.

Hospital and Morgue Scenes Were Improvised

One of the biggest revelations from the interview was that several of Rahul's funniest moments were not originally detailed in the screenplay.

He explained that the script simply mentioned that Ayushmann's character would save him in a hospital. The specific physical actions involving hospital equipment, his legs and the surrounding characters were developed during filming.

The morgue sequence, in which his character kisses a dead body, was written into the script. However, the repeated banging of his head against a lift door was designed separately by the action team with comedy in mind.

Rahul said he deliberately changed his expressions with every impact to ensure that the sequence remained entertaining rather than repetitive.

His character's romantic track with Holkar, played by Smita Tambe, also developed through performance and improvisation. The script established that she was in love with him, but several details of their interactions were shaped on set.

Why Rahul Bose Was Missing from the Trailer

Interestingly, some of Rahul's funniest scenes were kept out of the film's promotional trailer. The actor revealed that people who watched the trailer questioned whether his role had been reduced or removed.

He recalled being asked, "Tumhara role kat gaya kya?" Rahul encouraged them to watch the full film rather than judge his screen presence from the trailer.

Looking at the audience response after the release, he believes keeping those moments hidden was a good promotional decision. It allowed viewers to discover his unexpected comic performance inside the cinema rather than anticipate every joke beforehand.

Rahul Bose Was Not Worried About Trolling

The actor also addressed whether he worried about criticism for performing exaggerated physical comedy, including scenes that some viewers might find extreme.

Rahul explained that he trusted the director's vision. He did not want his role to become a brief comic appearance inserted merely for attention. He wanted it to feel like a complete performance.

He revealed that Akash increased his role after watching the rough cut, which strengthened his confidence in the character and the material.

Will Rahul Bose Return in Udta Teer 2?

When asked whether the unfulfilled romance between his character and Holkar could develop in a sequel, Rahul admitted that he had no confirmation about a second instalment.

However, he joked that if Udta Teer 2 happens, Akash A Kaushik would probably find another ridiculous avatar for him.

Rahul also spoke positively about working with first-time directors, saying he enjoys discovering the creative spark and freshness they bring to their projects.

With Udta Teer, Rahul Bose has demonstrated that his acting range extends well beyond intense and serious characters. His unexpected physical comedy has given audiences a fresh reason to appreciate him and has become one of the film's memorable highlights.
