One of Bollywood’s most iconic romantic thrillers, Fanaa (2006), is remembered for the intense chemistry between Aamir Khan and Kajol. But did you know that Hrithik Roshan was originally offered the lead role—long before Aamir stepped in?

Yes, the charming and versatile Hrithik was director Kunal Kohli’s first choice to play the enigmatic terrorist, Rehan, who falls in love with a blind girl, played by Kajol. The revelation has surprised many fans, especially those who couldn’t imagine anyone else but Aamir in that layered role.

Why Did Hrithik Say No?

According to reports, Hrithik politely turned down the offer due to creative differences. At the time, he was riding high on the success of his action-packed roles and may not have been convinced about playing a romantic character with grey shades.

Director Kunal Kohli recently confirmed in an interview that although Hrithik was his top pick, things didn’t materialize. He didn’t reveal much, but industry sources suggest that Hrithik wasn’t entirely aligned with the film’s tone and story arc.

Aamir Khan Stepped In—And the Rest Is History

After Hrithik’s exit, the film was offered to Aamir Khan, who instantly connected with the layered, emotionally complex character. His performance was critically acclaimed, and Fanaa went on to become a box office hit, cementing its place among the most memorable Bollywood dramas of the 2000s.

Interestingly, this wasn’t the first time Hrithik had passed on a significant role that later turned iconic with another actor. But it does highlight how casting choices can dramatically change the fate and feel of a film.

What If?

It’s hard not to wonder: What would Fanaa have looked like with Hrithik Roshan and Kajol? Would the film have had the same emotional intensity? Would it have been even bigger at the box office?

While those questions may never have definite answers, one thing is certain: Fanaa was a turning point for Aamir Khan—and a missed opportunity for Hrithik Roshan.
