How “Animal” Reflects Changes in Bollywood’s Angry Young Man: Insights from Javed Akhtar

The Evolution of the Angry Young Man
Akhtar explained that today’s films often show the Angry Young Man as a cartoonish figure who demands women to be submissive. He compared this to older films, like those he wrote with Salim Khan in the 1970s, where the Angry Young Man was a more realistic character. “Zanjeer” was one of the first films to show this type of character well.
Ranbir Kapoor’s “Animal”
Akhtar mentioned a scene in “Animal” where Ranbir Kapoor’s character, Ranvijay, tells Tripti Dimri’s character, Zoya, to lick his shoes. When asked if he had seen the film, Akhtar said, “No, thank God.” He added that although he did not watch the movie, he knew about the scene from the news and from what people had told him.
Earlier, at the 9th Ajanta-Ellora International Film Festival, Akhtar had said that the success of films like “Animal” was dangerous. The film’s director, Sandeep Reddy Vanga, responded by saying that Akhtar should also look at his own son Farhan Akhtar’s work, like the series “Mirzapur.”
Women in Salim-Javed Films
Akhtar pointed out that while he hadn’t written films specifically about women, the female characters in his movies were never shown as foolish. He said that in Salim-Javed films, women had full rights and were not silent characters. Examples of this can be seen in movies like “Zanjeer” and “Trishul.”
