5 Big Changes Kiran Rao Sees in Love, Marriage and Modern Relationships

Kiran Rao has opened up about the changing definition of love, marriage and intimacy, saying today’s younger generation enjoys a level of freedom that was not common during her time.

Filmmaker Kiran Rao has sparked a conversation about changing relationship norms with her candid views on love, marriage and intimacy. While promoting her segment in Netflix’s Lust Stories 3, Rao compared the relationship expectations of her generation with those of young people today.

According to the filmmaker, relationships have become considerably more open, with young people feeling freer to express their emotions and make personal choices. She also pointed out that marriage is no longer considered a necessary condition for developing a deep emotional or physical relationship.

Her comments have attracted attention because they highlight how dramatically social expectations around relationships have changed over the years.

1. Young People Have More Freedom

Kiran Rao prefers to describe today's generation as “free” rather than “frivolous” when it comes to relationships.

She explained that young people today appear more comfortable expressing themselves and making choices according to their own feelings. According to her, the world itself has changed, and so have the ways in which people communicate and express their emotions.

For Rao, this sense of freedom became an important element while developing her Lust Stories 3 story. The segment follows two young people who are unattached and attracted to each other, with the narrative exploring what happens after they make certain choices.

2. Marriage Is No Longer the Only Path

One of Rao's biggest observations concerns the changing connection between marriage and relationships.

She recalled that during her generation, there was a strong expectation that emotional and physical intimacy would come within the boundaries of marriage, particularly an arranged marriage. That expectation, she said, is no longer universal.

Today, according to Rao, people can develop meaningful relationships without immediately deciding to get married. She sees this as one of the biggest differences between her generation and today's youth.

3. Physical and Emotional Bonds Have Changed

Rao also spoke about how people today can form both emotional and physical connections without marriage being the starting point.

She explained that young couples can build deep, intense and fulfilling relationships while remaining unmarried. Rather than presenting this as simply a generational conflict, Rao connected it to the broader changes taking place in society.

Her comments are particularly relevant to Lust Stories 3, an anthology that explores desire, attraction, relationships and the complexities of modern intimacy through four different stories.

4. Her Film Explores a New Generation

Rao's segment is built around two young people who are not tied down by conventional relationship expectations. They are attracted to each other, and the story examines the unexpected consequences of the choices they make.

For Rao, this setup offered an opportunity to explore a generation that approaches relationships differently from previous generations.

Instead of judging the characters through older social expectations, the filmmaker wanted to capture the freshness and freedom that she believes are associated with contemporary relationships.

5. Love and Lust Are Also Evolving

Rao has previously spoken about the complicated relationship between love and lust while discussing Lust Stories 3. She believes attraction can be the beginning of a relationship, while deeper love can develop after two people understand each other's personalities and imperfections.

She has also discussed the challenge of maintaining desire in long-term relationships, pointing out that familiarity can sometimes reduce the mystery that initially creates attraction.

According to Rao, keeping desire alive within a marriage requires effort because partners become increasingly familiar with each other over time.

Kiran Rao’s Take on Modern Love

Kiran Rao's comments offer an interesting perspective on how relationship expectations have changed between generations. Her observations do not simply focus on physical intimacy; they also touch upon personal freedom, emotional openness and the changing role of marriage.

Through her Lust Stories 3 segment, Rao has attempted to tell a story that reflects this evolving social environment. The filmmaker believes that today's young people have more freedom to define relationships according to their own choices.

Whether viewers agree with her perspective or not, her comments have certainly opened up another conversation around how love, intimacy and marriage are being understood in contemporary India.
