Toxic OTT Rights Face Major Price Cut After Box Office Failure

Yash's Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups is reportedly facing a steep drop in its OTT valuation after a disappointing theatrical run, with digital rights now expected to fetch around ₹30 crore.

Yash's much-awaited film Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups is facing a major setback in its post-theatrical business after failing to meet the massive expectations surrounding its release. According to a new report by Bollywood Hungama, the film's digital rights, which were reportedly expected to command a much higher price before release, could now be valued at around ₹30 crore.

The development comes after the Geetu Mohandas-directed film witnessed a sharp decline in theatrical collections following its opening day. Bollywood Hungama has described the situation as one of the biggest financial setbacks for a major Indian film, with industry estimates suggesting losses could be exceptionally high.

Toxic's OTT Business Takes a Hit

Before Toxic reached cinemas, its digital and satellite rights had reportedly become an important part of the film's overall business strategy. However, reports before release indicated that the makers had not finalised the OTT and satellite deals, reportedly hoping that a successful theatrical run would help them command a stronger price.

That strategy has now become considerably more difficult after the film's theatrical performance failed to match expectations.

According to Bollywood Hungama, the makers are now facing a dramatically lower valuation for the digital rights, with the figure reportedly dropping to around ₹30 crore. This is a trade report and not an officially announced OTT deal.

A Massive Opening Could Not Save the Film

Toxic initially appeared to be heading towards a strong theatrical run. The film opened on August 26 with a substantial first-day collection.

Bollywood Hungama currently lists the film's India opening-day collection at ₹50.31 crore, with its opening weekend reaching ₹116.48 crore. However, the collections declined sharply after the initial release period.

The film's second day saw a significant fall, and weekday collections subsequently dropped into single digits.

By September 5, Bollywood Hungama's tracker listed the film's India total at approximately ₹132.03 crore, with the predicted lifetime collection currently estimated at around ₹145–148 crore.

The sharp gap between the film's huge opening and its later performance has become one of the biggest talking points surrounding Toxic.

Why the OTT Valuation Has Fallen

The OTT market has become increasingly dependent on theatrical performance, audience response and the potential value a film can bring to a streaming platform.

A film that performs strongly in cinemas can often command a premium digital price because its theatrical success demonstrates audience demand. However, a poor theatrical run can weaken the bargaining position of producers.

In the case of Toxic, the makers reportedly chose to hold back the digital rights before release rather than accept a lower valuation. The hope was that Yash's star power and the film's large-scale production would produce a blockbuster theatrical result.

The subsequent slowdown has reportedly changed the equation.

Toxic Was Mounted on a Massive Budget

The reported OTT valuation becomes even more significant because Toxic was made on a very large budget.

The film was positioned as a major pan-India release and featured Yash in dual roles. It also had an ensemble cast that included Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Tara Sutaria and Huma Qureshi.

Yash's return to cinemas after KGF: Chapter 2 further increased expectations. The film was expected to benefit from the actor's massive popularity and the success of his previous franchise.

However, the response after the opening day was considerably weaker than anticipated.

Toxic Faces a Difficult Theatrical Run

The film's box-office trajectory changed dramatically after its opening.

Bollywood Hungama reported a roughly 70 per cent drop on Day 2, with the film collecting an estimated ₹45 crore gross in India after opening at around ₹120 crore gross on Day 1. The report warned at the time that the movie could face a difficult theatrical finish.

Subsequent figures have shown continued pressure on the film's daily collections.

Moneycontrol reported that Toxic had reached ₹234.70 crore in India net and around ₹322 crore worldwide after eight days, while also highlighting the sharp decline in daily earnings.

Different trade trackers use different methodologies, so box-office figures can vary between reports.

Reports of Earlier OTT Deals Remain Unconfirmed

There have been conflicting reports about Toxic's digital rights.

Before and after release, some reports claimed that platforms such as Zee5 had acquired the film's digital and satellite rights for a substantial amount. However, other trade reports said the rights remained unsold.

The Times of India, for example, reported that a deal worth around ₹235 crore had been attributed to Zee5 by another publication, but also noted that the makers had not officially confirmed the agreement or announced an OTT premiere date.

Therefore, the latest ₹30 crore figure should similarly be treated as a reported trade valuation, rather than a confirmed final transaction.

What This Means for Yash's Toxic

The situation highlights the growing financial risks associated with big-budget pan-India films.

Toxic had several factors working in its favour before release—Yash's popularity, a large budget, a major cast and the anticipation surrounding his return after KGF: Chapter 2. Yet the film's theatrical performance has reportedly fallen well short of the expectations attached to such a large production.

The potential reduction in OTT valuation could make the film's overall recovery even more challenging.

At the same time, the film's final financial outcome cannot be determined solely from its theatrical collections or an unconfirmed OTT valuation. Satellite rights, overseas revenue, music rights and other ancillary businesses also contribute to a film's overall economics.

For now, however, Toxic OTT rights have become another major concern surrounding the film after its disappointing theatrical run.

The movie's experience also serves as a reminder that a massive opening does not necessarily guarantee long-term box-office success. Toxic began with an impressive first day but struggled to maintain momentum, leaving its post-theatrical business facing considerable uncertainty.
