The upcoming Sourav Ganguly biopic has found itself at the centre of an unusual controversy involving an English county cricket club. Leicestershire County Cricket Club has been handed a 27-point penalty and fined £5,000, approximately Rs 6.4 lakh, after its home pitch at Grace Road was deemed to have breached pitch regulations.
During the disciplinary proceedings, the club's head groundsman cited an unscheduled Bollywood filming event linked to the Sourav Ganguly biopic as one of the factors that affected preparations for the pitch.
What Happened During the Sourav Ganguly Biopic Shoot?
The filming of Dada - The Sourav Ganguly Story took place at Leicestershire's Grace Road shortly before the club's County Championship match against Glamorgan.
According to the groundsman, the Sourav Ganguly biopic shoot happened four days before the match and affected the time available for regular pitch maintenance. He said that he was unable to work on or cover the pitch during the filming.
The timing became significant because the region was also experiencing temperatures of around 35 degrees Celsius. The combination of hot weather and the disruption to normal pitch preparation was cited by the club while explaining the condition of the surface.
Leicestershire Fined £5,000 and Docked 27 Points
Leicestershire were penalised after their pitch during the County Championship match against Glamorgan, played from August 20 to 23, was rated as poor.
The disciplinary process resulted in the club losing the 19 points it had earned from its 42-run victory over Glamorgan. An additional eight-point deduction was also imposed, taking the overall penalty to 27 points.
The club was also fined £5,000, which is roughly equivalent to Rs 6.4 lakh.
The decision has put Leicestershire under significant pressure in the County Championship Division One standings.
Panel Rejected the Biopic Shoot as a Mitigating Factor
Although the Sourav Ganguly biopic shoot was mentioned during the disciplinary proceedings, the panel did not accept it as a sufficient mitigating factor.
The filming reportedly lasted only one day, and the disciplinary panel concluded that the club's approach to preparing the pitch was unreasonable. The panel did not find that Leicestershire deliberately prepared a poor surface.
The controversy therefore does not mean that the film production was found responsible for the poor pitch. Instead, the club had cited the filming as one circumstance that made its preparation more difficult.
Groundsman Explained How the Shoot Affected Preparations
Leicestershire head groundsman Callum Lewin told the Cricket Regulator that several circumstances had affected the pitch before the Glamorgan match.
He pointed to the unusually hot weather as well as the filming event. According to his account, he was not permitted to work on the pitch or cover it while the shoot was taking place.
The match subsequently produced concerns over uneven bounce. Match referee Ian Ramage reportedly recorded 43 examples of uneven bounce during the game, with moving cracks contributing to the problem.
The disciplinary panel ultimately determined that the pitch did not meet the required standards.

The film at the centre of the controversy is Dada - The Sourav Ganguly Story, based on the life and cricket career of former India captain Sourav Ganguly.
Rajkummar Rao is playing the lead role as Ganguly in the biographical sports drama. The film is being directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and produced by Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg under the Luv Films banner.
The project is expected to follow Ganguly's journey from his early cricketing years to becoming one of India's most prominent captains.
The Sourav Ganguly biopic is scheduled to release on May 14, 2027.
Why the Pitch Became a Major Issue
The pitch controversy has become particularly important for Leicestershire because the points deduction could have a major impact on its County Championship campaign.
The club has been fighting to remain in Division One, and the 27-point penalty has pushed it into a difficult position. Leicestershire has also been given a limited period to appeal the disciplinary decision.
The club said it was reviewing the ruling and considering its available options.
