Stand-up comedian Harsh Gujral has built a strong following with his sharp observations, relatable humour and unfiltered comedy. But according to the comedian, the person audiences see on stage is not necessarily the complete picture of who he really is.
After appearing on The Traitors, Harsh is now being seen on the action reality show Khatron Ke Khiladi. Speaking about his reality-show journey, he explained that these platforms allow viewers to see his personality without the protection of a prepared comedy routine.
For Harsh, this is particularly important because jokes can sometimes create a completely different impression of a comedian.
“They Don’t Know Who I Really Am”
Harsh explained that stand-up performances usually involve scripts, tested jokes and carefully prepared material. While comedians may improvise during a performance, much of what happens on stage is still part of their professional act.
That can sometimes lead audiences to misunderstand the person behind the jokes.
Harsh pointed out that someone may hear one of his jokes and conclude that he is rude or insensitive, without knowing what he is actually like away from the stage.
Reality television, according to him, changes that equation. It gives viewers the opportunity to observe his reactions, behaviour and personality in unscripted situations.
Reality Shows Help Him Connect With a Bigger Audience

Harsh also sees reality television as an important way of reaching people who may not regularly watch stand-up comedy.
He recalled travelling to the US and Canada for his stand-up shows, where audiences were already talking to him about the reality show he had appeared in.
That experience made him realise how powerful television can be for a comedian trying to expand his audience.
Reality shows already have a large viewer base, and appearing on them allows performers like Harsh to connect with people who may not have discovered their stand-up work otherwise.
From Stand-Up Comedy to Reality Television
Harsh Gujral has gradually expanded his career beyond traditional stand-up comedy. His appearance on The Traitors introduced him to a different kind of audience, while Khatron Ke Khiladi has pushed him into an entirely new environment.
Unlike a comedy stage, where Harsh controls much of the performance, reality shows place celebrities in situations where their spontaneous reactions become part of the entertainment.
That unpredictability can reveal personality traits that audiences might never see during a structured stand-up performance.
For Harsh, that is precisely what makes these shows valuable.
Why Comedy Has Become More Difficult
Harsh also spoke about one of the biggest challenges facing comedians today—the possibility that a joke can quickly go viral without its original context.
A joke delivered inside a comedy club can be experienced very differently when a short clip reaches social media. Without the surrounding conversation or tone, viewers may interpret it differently from how it was originally intended.
Harsh acknowledged that comedians are increasingly aware of this risk.
He explained that jokes sometimes backfire, leading to criticism and difficult situations. According to him, comedians naturally observe what is happening around them and turn those observations into humour, but there is always a possibility that the audience may react negatively.
“Everybody Is Scared”
The comedian admitted that the current environment has made performers more cautious.
When a joke becomes controversial, comedians can face intense reactions online, making it difficult to predict how a particular piece of humour will be received.
Harsh suggested that everyone in the comedy space is aware of this pressure because dealing with the consequences of a joke that backfires is not easy.
At the same time, he continues to work in the same observational style that helped establish his popularity.
Khatron Ke Khiladi Shows a Different Side of Harsh Gujral
His appearance on Khatron Ke Khiladi gives audiences an opportunity to see Harsh outside his usual comfort zone.
The show places contestants in physically demanding and frightening situations, leaving little room for a carefully controlled performance. For a comedian known for making people laugh, watching him react to fear and pressure offers a very different kind of entertainment.
It also supports Harsh's larger point: reality television can reveal the person behind the performer.
