Veteran actress Zeenat Aman has once again opened up about one of the most difficult chapters of her life—her marriage to late actor Mazhar Khan. In a recent conversation, the Bollywood icon reflected on love, marriage, infidelity, personal boundaries and the importance of not losing one’s identity while trying to save a relationship.

Zeenat Aman Looks Back Without Regret

Speaking about the intense public scrutiny surrounding her personal life, Zeenat Aman said she now views her younger self with compassion. She explained that she was young when she made important life decisions and acted according to what she believed and wanted at the time.

Rather than judging those decisions today, she believes growing older has allowed her to understand them better.

Her comments also reflect how dramatically the public conversation around celebrity relationships has changed. Zeenat pointed out that infidelity is not something unique to Bollywood—it is a human failing. What makes celebrity relationships different, she explained, is that private heartbreak can quickly become public entertainment.

Marriage Was About Building a Family

Zeenat married actor Mazhar Khan in 1985. She has previously explained that she entered the marriage because she was ready to become a mother and believed marriage was the natural path towards building a family.

However, things began to change soon after the wedding. In an earlier interview with Simi Garewal, the actress recalled that she realised during the first year of her marriage that she had made a mistake. She was also pregnant with her first child when she came across a magazine report about another woman allegedly involved with Mazhar.

Despite the pain, Zeenat chose to stay. Her decision was influenced heavily by her children and her hope that the marriage could eventually improve.

Infidelity Was Not the Only Challenge

According to Zeenat’s past accounts, the difficulties in her marriage extended beyond allegations of infidelity. She has also spoken about Mazhar’s dependence on prescription painkillers and the enormous responsibility she took on while caring for his health.

The actress has recalled spending years trying to help him, including travelling for medical treatment and personally taking care of his medical needs. At one stage, she said, she was close to a nervous breakdown because of the emotional and physical toll of the situation.

For years, Zeenat continued to fight what she described as her husband’s battles. But eventually, she realised that she could not save another person by destroying herself in the process.

‘Leaving Is an Act of Love for Yourself’

One of the strongest messages from Zeenat’s latest reflection is her belief that leaving a toxic relationship does not necessarily mean giving up on love.

She explained that heartbreak taught her something success never could—boundaries. In her view, being loved is not enough if a person is not respected. She also challenged the idea that staying in a difficult relationship is always the more noble choice.

For Zeenat, leaving eventually became an act of self-preservation. She had continued to care for Mazhar even after deciding that she could no longer remain in the marriage.

Zeenat’s Advice on Healthy Relationships

The actress also shared her thoughts on what a healthy relationship should look like. According to her, a relationship should allow both people to grow rather than forcing one person to become smaller.

She encouraged people to ask themselves some basic but important questions: Do you feel safe with your partner? Can you disagree without fear? Can you maintain your own friendships, ambitions and financial independence? Most importantly, do you like the person you become when you are with that individual?

Her comments reflect a broader change in the way Zeenat Aman now talks about relationships. Instead of focusing on the details of her past marriage, she appears more interested in the lessons she took from it.

A Difficult Chapter That Shaped Zeenat Aman

Zeenat and Mazhar had two sons, Azaan and Zahaan, and remained married for around 12 years before she eventually left. Mazhar later died in 1998 following kidney failure.

Today, Zeenat Aman looks at that chapter of her life through a different lens. Her story is not simply about a troubled marriage or heartbreak—it is about learning when commitment becomes self-abandonment and when protecting your own identity becomes necessary.

For an actress who has always been seen as unconventional, her latest reflections once again show why Zeenat Aman continues to command attention decades after her Bollywood debut.
