Vikrant Massey Was Replaced by Jitendra Kumar in Mirzapur: The Movie — Here’s Why the Director Calls It a ‘Blessing in Disguise’

The casting of Jitendra Kumar as Bablu Pandit in Mirzapur: The Movie surprised fans who remembered Vikrant Massey in the role. Director Gurmmeet Singh has now explained why the change happened and how Jitendra’s arrival allowed the team to give Bablu a completely different identity.

The transition from OTT to the big screen has brought several familiar characters back to audiences, but one casting change in Mirzapur: The Movie immediately caught fans' attention. Jitendra Kumar stepped into the role of Bablu Pandit, a character originally played by Vikrant Massey in the first season of the hit series.

Now, director Gurmmeet Singh has opened up about the decision and explained why what initially appeared to be a major challenge eventually became a creative opportunity for the film.

According to Singh, bringing Jitendra Kumar into the role allowed the filmmakers to rethink Bablu rather than simply recreate the version audiences had already seen on the show. He described the change as a “blessing in disguise.”

Why Was Jitendra Kumar Chosen as Bablu Pandit?

Vikrant Massey originally played Bablu Pandit in Mirzapur Season 1. The character was Guddu Pandit's younger brother and became an important part of the show's early storyline.

For Mirzapur: The Movie, however, the role was recast with Jitendra Kumar.

Gurmmeet Singh explained that the creative process should not always be restricted by what has already been established. According to the director, the casting change opened new possibilities for the filmmakers and helped them approach the character differently.

Instead of attempting to imitate Massey's earlier portrayal, Jitendra was allowed to make the character his own.

Jitendra Kumar Gave Bablu a New Identity

One of the biggest changes was the way Bablu was written for the film.

Singh explained that the Bablu audiences saw in the series largely supported his brother and was portrayed as someone who became a victim of the violent world around him.

The film's Bablu, however, has significantly more agency.

According to the director, the new version of Bablu has his own ambitions, plans and agenda and becomes someone who actively participates in the larger power game rather than simply reacting to events.

This creative shift gave Jitendra Kumar an opportunity to portray a more assertive version of the character.

Gurmmeet Singh Calls the Casting Change a ‘Blessing in Disguise’

The director's comments suggest that the recasting eventually worked in favour of the film's creative direction.

Singh said that Jitendra Kumar's entry brought a new energy to the Mirzapur universe and helped give the film an identity of its own.

Rather than treating the change as something that needed to be hidden, the filmmakers used it as an opportunity to take the character in a new direction.

Singh also praised Jitendra for making the role his own and helping the team become comfortable with the new interpretation.

Jitendra Kumar Faced a Familiar Character

Taking over an established role is particularly challenging when the original performance has already become strongly associated with the character.

Vikrant Massey's Bablu Pandit was introduced during the first season of Mirzapur and remains familiar to the show's long-time viewers.

Jitendra therefore had to enter an established fictional universe while also creating a distinct interpretation.

Rather than reproducing Massey's performance, the film's creative team chose to make this Bablu different. That distinction became an important part of the transition from the series to the movie.

Mirzapur: The Movie Brings the Franchise to Theatres

Mirzapur: The Movie represents the franchise's transition from streaming to theatrical cinema.

The film brings back several familiar faces, including Pankaj Tripathi as Kaleen Bhaiyya, Ali Fazal as Guddu Pandit, Shweta Tripathi and Rasika Dugal, alongside Jitendra Kumar and other additions to the cast.

The movie also features Divyenndu as Munna Bhaiyya, despite the character's fate in the original series, while Ravi Kishan joins the franchise as another new addition.

The film was released in theatres on September 4, 2026, marking a significant new chapter for the Mirzapur universe.

The Film Has Delivered a Strong Box Office Run

The theatrical experiment has also attracted significant audience attention.

According to the latest reports, Mirzapur: The Movie had reached a worldwide gross of ₹333.29 crore by Day 27, according to figures cited by The Indian Express and Times of India.

The film's performance has added another dimension to the discussion around the decision to bring the Mirzapur franchise from OTT to theatres.

What Made Jitendra’s Version Different?

The key difference appears to be the character's narrative importance.

Instead of presenting Bablu simply as Guddu's younger brother, the film gives him an independent role in the story. His ambitions and decisions become part of the larger conflict.

This allowed Jitendra Kumar to approach the character with a different energy and personality.

For audiences, this means that the Bablu Pandit seen in Mirzapur: The Movie is not intended to be a direct continuation of the exact characterisation from Season 1.

A Casting Change That Changed the Character

The decision to replace Vikrant Massey with Jitendra Kumar initially generated curiosity among Mirzapur fans. However, Gurmmeet Singh's explanation reveals that the change was closely connected with the filmmakers' larger creative approach.

The director believes the recasting gave the team an opportunity to reinvent Bablu and make him more central to the film's narrative.

With Jitendra Kumar bringing his own interpretation to the role, the filmmakers were able to transform what could have been a difficult casting transition into a creative opportunity.

For Mirzapur fans, the biggest surprise may not simply be who plays Bablu Pandit, but how differently the character has been imagined for the big screen.
