Tabu Turns 55: Unfinished Love Stories, Childhood Struggles and Why She Chose Single Life

As Tabu celebrates her 55th birthday, her personal journey is attracting attention once again. From her parents' separation during childhood and reported relationships with Sanjay Kapoor and Nagarjuna to her views on marriage and independence, here is a look at the experiences that shaped the actress's life beyond the silver screen.

One of Bollywood's most versatile actresses, Tabu turned 55 on November 4, 2026. Over a career spanning several decades, she has earned immense respect for choosing challenging roles and delivering memorable performances. However, alongside her professional achievements, her personal life has frequently attracted public curiosity.

The actress has never married and has spoken openly about her perspective on relationships, independence and happiness. Her journey has included childhood challenges, reported relationships and difficult experiences, but she has consistently maintained her individuality.

On her birthday, here is a look at some important chapters of Tabu's life that have shaped the person and performer she is today.

Parents Separated When Tabu Was Just Three Years Old

Tabu was born on November 4, 1971, in Hyderabad. Her parents separated when she was around three years old, and she grew up primarily with her mother, Rizwana, and her maternal grandparents.

In an appearance on Simi Garewal's chat show Rendezvous with Simi Garewal, the actress spoke about her childhood and her relationship with her father, Jamal Hashmi. She revealed that she did not have memories of him and was not particularly interested in meeting him.

Her elder sister, Farah Naaz, occasionally met their father, but Tabu chose not to pursue that connection. She also explained why she did not use his surname, saying that she was comfortable with the identity she had grown up with.

Despite the separation, Tabu has recalled having a happy childhood with her maternal grandparents. Her mother and grandmother played important roles in her upbringing.

Sanjay Kapoor and Tabu's Early Relationship

One of the relationships associated with Tabu during her early career was with actor Sanjay Kapoor. The two worked together in the romantic film Prem, which was released in 1995.

Interestingly, Sanjay Kapoor himself spoke about their relationship in an interview with ETimes. He recalled that he was dating Tabu during the initial period of the film's shooting.

The production of Prem reportedly took several years, and the film eventually underwent a change of director, with Satish Kaushik taking over from Shekhar Kapur.

Although their relationship did not continue, neither actor has publicly provided a detailed account of why they separated. Some media reports have linked the breakup to other developments in Sanjay's personal life, but those explanations should not be treated as confirmed facts.

Was Tabu in a Relationship With Sajid Nadiadwala?

Tabu's name was also linked with filmmaker Sajid Nadiadwala during the 1990s. Unlike many celebrity rumours, the actress acknowledged their relationship in a 1997 interview with Rediff.

When asked about dating Sajid, she confirmed that they were seeing each other. However, she also made it clear that marriage was not part of her immediate plans.

Their relationship reportedly did not lead to marriage, but the two maintained a friendship. In a 2011 interview, Sajid also spoke warmly about his bond with Tabu and described them as friends.

Both have largely kept the details of their personal relationship private.

Tabu and Nagarjuna: A Bond That Remained Special

Perhaps the most widely discussed relationship associated with Tabu has been her reported closeness with Telugu superstar Nagarjuna.

The two actors were linked for several years, and media reports frequently described their association as a long-term relationship. However, Nagarjuna was already married to Amala Akkineni, and neither actor publicly confirmed the details of the alleged romance.

During her appearance on Koffee with Karan in 2007, Tabu spoke about Nagarjuna and described him as one of the closest people in her life. She also suggested that their bond was special but difficult to define with a particular label.

In a 2017 interview with The Times of India, Nagarjuna described Tabu as a very good friend and spoke affectionately about their long-standing association.

Despite years of speculation, the two have not publicly provided a detailed explanation of their personal equation.

Why Tabu Never Considered Marriage Essential

Tabu has offered one of her clearest perspectives on relationships in an interview with Hindustan Times Brunch.

She explained that happiness does not depend entirely on relationship status. According to her, being alone is not necessarily painful, while being with the wrong person can create even greater unhappiness.

She also spoke about independence and how she wanted to work, travel and explore the world on her own terms. For Tabu, an ideal relationship should allow both individuals to grow rather than restrict their ambitions.

Her views challenged the conventional expectation that marriage is necessary for a fulfilling life.

In another interview, she also questioned why people attach so much importance to whether someone is married or has children. She made it clear that she does not judge people based on their marital status and does not want others to define her through it.

Blackbuck Case and Legal Controversy

Another difficult chapter in Tabu's public life began with the 1998 blackbuck poaching case in Rajasthan. She was among the actors named as an accused alongside Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre and Neelam.

In April 2018, a Jodhpur court acquitted Tabu and the other three actors, while Salman Khan was convicted in the case.

The legal matter attracted renewed attention after the Rajasthan government challenged the acquittals in 2025. The proceedings have remained a separate legal development and should not be confused with the 2018 verdict.

A Career Defined by Talent, Not Relationship Status

From Maachis and Chandni Bar to Maqbool, Haider, Andhadhun and Drishyam, Tabu has repeatedly demonstrated her ability to take on complex characters.

She has won two National Film Awards and received the Padma Shri in 2011. Her work across Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and international cinema has established her as one of India's most respected performers.

At 55, Tabu's story is not simply about relationships that did not lead to marriage. It is also about independence, personal choices and a career built on remarkable performances. Her own words make one thing clear: she does not believe that a person's happiness or worth should be measured by whether they have a partner.
