Sunny Deol Muslim Role Sparked Debate? Rajkumar Santoshi Rejects Shabana Azmi’s Theory

The disappointing box-office performance of Batwara 1947 has triggered an interesting debate within Bollywood. After veteran actress Shabana Azmi suggested that audiences may have struggled to accept Sunny Deol as a Muslim character, director Rajkumar Santoshi has openly disagreed with her theory.

The filmmaker believes the film’s underperformance cannot simply be blamed on Sunny Deol’s character or religious identity. Instead, Santoshi pointed towards the changing social environment and questioned whether audiences have become less accepting of characters belonging to communities different from those traditionally associated with a particular star.

What Did Shabana Azmi Say About Sunny Deol’s Role?

Shabana Azmi recently expressed her surprise over the theatrical response to Batwara 1947. According to her, some viewers appeared uncomfortable with the idea of Sunny Deol playing a Muslim character because audiences have strongly associated him with action and patriotic roles.

Azmi also claimed that she encountered people who had misunderstood Sunny’s character and assumed that he was playing a Pakistani. She clarified that his character, Sikandar Mirza, is an Indian Muslim, and said she was surprised that this distinction had apparently not registered with some viewers.

The actress compared the situation with Amitabh Bachchan, pointing out that he had successfully portrayed Muslim characters in films such as Coolie. Her larger concern was whether changing attitudes towards religious identity had influenced the way audiences viewed a mainstream star in such a role.

Rajkumar Santoshi Has a Different Take

Rajkumar Santoshi has now rejected the idea that Sunny Deol’s Muslim character was responsible for the film’s poor performance.

In an interview with Variety India, Santoshi cited Amitabh Bachchan’s portrayal of a Muslim hero in Coolie as an example of how mainstream Hindi cinema has previously featured stars playing characters from different communities.

The filmmaker questioned whether audiences had reached a point where they could no longer comfortably accept a hero portraying someone from another religious background. He argued that viewers should focus on the story and the filmmaker’s intention rather than judging a character purely through the actor’s established public image.

Santoshi Raises a Bigger Question About Tolerance

Interestingly, while rejecting Shabana Azmi’s specific theory, Santoshi did acknowledge that society has changed.

The filmmaker said he feels people have become less tolerant and inclusive compared with earlier periods. He argued that cinema should be viewed through the intention of the filmmaker and the message the writer wants to communicate.

Santoshi also spoke about his own religious background, saying that he is a Hindu and regularly visits temples, but believes the positive values of different faiths can coexist. According to him, the fundamental message of religion should be equality rather than exclusion.

Who Is Sunny Deol Playing in Batwara 1947?

In Batwara 1947, Sunny Deol plays Sikandar Mirza, an Indian Muslim whose life is dramatically affected by the Partition of 1947.

After being allotted a house following Partition, Sikandar discovers that a Hindu woman, Mai, played by Shabana Azmi, is already living there. Rather than simply forcing her out, he chooses to protect her as tensions and religious violence escalate around them.

The film therefore attempts to present Partition through a story centred on humanity, compassion and the relationship between people divided by religion.

Why Did Batwara 1947 Underperform?

The film, which also stars Preity Zinta, Ali Fazal and Abhimanyu Singh, released on August 14 alongside Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2. Despite significant expectations surrounding the reunion of Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi, Batwara 1947 struggled commercially.

However, whether Sunny Deol’s Muslim role was actually a major reason for the film’s performance remains a matter of interpretation. Shabana Azmi believes audience perception may have played a role, while Santoshi clearly does not agree.

A Debate Bigger Than One Film

The Batwara 1947 controversy has now moved beyond box-office numbers. At its centre is a larger question about whether audiences can separate an actor from the image they have built around him over decades.

Sunny Deol has spent much of his career playing powerful, action-oriented and patriotic characters. Batwara 1947 asked viewers to see him through a very different lens.
