SS Rajamouli to Create a New Language for Mahesh Babu's Varanasi

SS Rajamouli is reportedly taking world-building to another level with Varanasi. The filmmaker is said to have hired a linguistic expert to create an entirely new language and written script for Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran’s ambitious adventure film.

Filmmaker SS Rajamouli is reportedly preparing another ambitious experiment for his upcoming film Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran. According to reports, the director has brought in a linguistic expert to develop a completely new fictional language for the film, taking his approach to storytelling beyond elaborate sets, visual effects and large-scale action sequences.

The development has generated interest because Rajamouli previously introduced audiences to Kiliki, the fictional language spoken by the Kalakeya warriors in Baahubali: The Beginning. This time, however, the language is reportedly expected to play a more significant role in the story, including a sequence involving ancient inscriptions and a mystery that the central characters must solve.

SS Rajamouli’s New Language for Varanasi

According to a report by Variety India, the Varanasi team has hired a linguistic expert to create a new language from scratch. The reported plan goes beyond inventing a few unusual words or phrases. The language is expected to have a written script and a more developed structure, giving it a distinct identity within the film’s fictional world.

The idea reflects Rajamouli’s interest in building immersive cinematic experiences. In large-scale fantasy and adventure films, languages can help establish the history, culture and identity of fictional communities. A carefully designed language can also make a fictional civilisation feel more authentic to audiences.

Although the filmmakers have not publicly revealed the language’s name or detailed rules, the reported development suggests that it could become an important part of Varanasi’s storytelling. The project remains under wraps, so the full extent of its role will become clearer as more official information emerges.

How the New Language Will Feature in Varanasi

The new language is reportedly connected to a sequence in which the characters enter a cave containing ancient writings on its walls. They will need to understand the unfamiliar script to uncover information linked to the film’s central mystery.

This means the language may serve a narrative purpose rather than functioning merely as a background detail. The characters’ attempt to interpret the inscriptions could help move the story forward and reveal clues about their journey across different periods of history.

The reported sequence also fits the film’s broader time-travel adventure concept. Varanasi is expected to move across multiple timelines and locations, combining large-scale action with elements rooted in Indian cultural themes.

However, the makers have not officially confirmed all the details surrounding the cave sequence. For now, the information comes from media reports, and the exact circumstances in which the language appears remain undisclosed.

From Baahubali’s Kiliki to Varanasi’s Fictional Language

Rajamouli has experimented with fictional languages before. For Baahubali: The Beginning, released in 2015, he worked with lyricist and screenwriter Madhan Karky to create Kiliki, also known as Kilikili.

The language was spoken by the Kalakeya warriors who attacked the kingdom of Mahishmati. Its unusual vocabulary and distinctive sound helped make the warriors stand apart from other characters in the film.

Kiliki became a memorable feature of the Baahubali universe and eventually gained a following beyond the movie. However, its use in the film was primarily spoken, with only limited exposure to its written form.

The reported plans for Varanasi appear more extensive. A developed writing system, along with rules governing vocabulary and sentence structure, could allow the fictional language to function as a more elaborate part of the film’s world.

If the reports prove accurate, Rajamouli will once again be exploring how linguistic design can contribute to the atmosphere and mythology of a major Indian production.

Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Lead Varanasi

Varanasi features Mahesh Babu in the lead role, alongside Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran. The film is directed by SS Rajamouli, with a story developed with his frequent collaborators.

Mahesh Babu is reportedly playing Rudhra, while Priyanka Chopra Jonas plays Mandakini and Prithviraj Sukumaran appears as Kumbha. The project has attracted attention because it brings together major performers from different film industries under one of India's most internationally recognised directors.

The story has been described as an action-adventure involving multiple timelines, with its narrative moving across locations that include Varanasi, Africa, Antarctica and ancient Rome. The film is expected to combine mythology-inspired elements with a globe-spanning adventure.

With this scale, the reported fictional language could become another element that distinguishes the production from conventional commercial cinema.

Varanasi Release Date and Expectations

The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027, coinciding with Ugadi. It is also reported to be among the most technically ambitious projects of Rajamouli’s career, with large-format IMAX presentation forming part of its cinematic plans.

Expectations are high because of Rajamouli’s track record with Baahubali and RRR, both of which reached audiences well beyond their original language markets. His films are known for combining strong visual storytelling with ambitious world-building.

The creation of a new language would add another layer to that approach, potentially making Varanasi’s ancient setting more immersive. Until the makers release official details, audiences will have to wait to discover how the language sounds, what its script looks like and how it connects to the film’s larger mystery.
