Sonal has described the experience as something that felt destined to happen, saying she feels Mirzapur chose her rather than her simply pursuing the franchise.
From Jannat’s Zoya To Mumtaz Bibi
For years, Sonal Chauhan has been strongly associated with Zoya from Jannat. The 2008 film gave her a memorable Bollywood debut and audiences continued to identify her with the character long after its release.
However, Mirzapur The Movie has created another strong character association for the actress. Sonal recently told NDTV that she loves being called the “Jannat Girl,” but she is equally enjoying the fact that audiences are now calling her Mumtaz.
For an actor, she believes being recognised by a character’s name means the audience has connected with the performance rather than simply seeing the actor behind it.
Why Mumtaz Bibi Was A Challenge
Mumtaz represented a completely different acting challenge for Sonal. Unlike many of her earlier roles, the character belongs to the dusty, violent and relatively rural world of Mirzapur.

Mumtaz And Babban’s Unusual Love Story
In Mirzapur The Movie, Sonal Chauhan plays Mumtaz opposite Ravi Kishan’s Babban Yadav. Their relationship is set against the film’s violent crime world.
Sonal has spoken about the age difference between the two characters, explaining that the film did not attempt to hide it. Instead, the age gap was treated as an existing part of their relationship.
She also praised Ravi Kishan for bringing honesty to the role, describing his approach to acting as something audiences can connect with.
Audience Love Surprised Sonal
Sonal admitted that she had some concerns before entering the Mirzapur universe. The franchise already had a loyal audience, and transitioning from a successful OTT series into a theatrical movie brought an additional challenge.
She said she wondered whether audiences would accept new additions to the established world. However, her confidence grew because of the way director Gurmmeet Singh and writer Puneet Krishna had historically developed characters within the franchise.
The response to Mumtaz eventually exceeded her expectations. Sonal told NDTV that the love she has received for the character is comparable to the affection she received for Zoya, while also describing it as much greater than she anticipated.

The official Excel Entertainment synopsis describes the movie as an action-crime thriller centred on power, bloodshed and revenge.
For Sonal, becoming part of this world has turned into an important professional experience. She has praised the atmosphere on set and credited the director and writer for giving her character enough space to make an impact.
