The long-running Disha Salian death case has entered a new phase, nearly six years after the former celebrity manager died in Mumbai. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has now registered an FIR and taken up the investigation after the Bombay High Court directed the agency to conduct a fresh and detailed probe into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Disha Salian, who had worked as a manager for several celebrities, was found dead on June 8, 2020, after falling from a residential building in Mumbai's Malad area. Her death occurred just days before actor Sushant Singh Rajput, with whom she had worked professionally, was found dead at his Bandra residence on June 14, 2020. The timing of the two deaths subsequently generated intense public speculation and numerous theories.
CBI Registers FIR After Bombay High Court Order
The latest development follows a significant order from the Bombay High Court. On September 2, the court directed the CBI to register an FIR and investigate the case after hearing a petition filed by Disha's father, Satish Salian.
The court had expressed concerns about the manner in which the original investigation was handled. The case had initially been dealt with through an Accidental Death Report (ADR) rather than a regular FIR. According to the court, the circumstances warranted a proper investigation into whether a cognisable offence had occurred.
The High Court also directed that a senior CBI officer be appointed to handle the investigation and that Mumbai Police hand over the relevant records and documents to the central agency.
What Happened to Disha Salian?
Disha Salian was 28 when she died in June 2020. She had worked as a celebrity manager and had professional links with several people in the entertainment industry, including Sushant Singh Rajput.
According to the initial police version, Salian died after falling from a high-rise building in Mumbai. Mumbai Police subsequently treated the death as a suicide and maintained that there was no evidence of foul play. The case, however, continued to attract questions, particularly after her family raised doubts about the circumstances surrounding her death.
Her death gained even greater public attention because of its proximity to Sushant Singh Rajput's death six days later. The two cases became linked in public discussions, although the circumstances of the two deaths and the investigations into them have been separate.
Why Was the CBI Probe Ordered?
The demand for a fresh investigation was raised by Disha's father, Satish Salian, who approached the Bombay High Court alleging that the original inquiry had failed to properly address several aspects of the case.
During earlier hearings, the court questioned why an FIR had not been registered despite allegations concerning the circumstances of Disha's death. The bench also raised questions about aspects of the medical and investigative record and the handling of documents related to the case.
The High Court eventually concluded that a fresh investigation by another agency was warranted. It therefore directed the CBI to register an FIR and examine the circumstances of the death.
Importantly, the court made clear that registration of an FIR does not establish anyone's guilt. The investigation agency must first collect evidence and determine whether a criminal offence occurred and whether there is sufficient material against any individual.
CBI Will Examine the Evidence
With the FIR now registered, the CBI is expected to examine the evidence collected during the earlier Mumbai Police inquiry as well as any additional material that may become available.
The agency can question witnesses, examine documentary and forensic records, review statements and investigate the sequence of events surrounding Disha's death. Mumbai Police had already prepared case-related documents, and reports indicate that the CBI had begun seeking records from the Malwani Police Station following the High Court's direction.
The central agency will ultimately have to determine whether the available evidence supports the allegations made by the family or whether the original conclusion requires no change.
Disha Salian and Sushant Singh Rajput Connection
The connection between Disha Salian and Sushant Singh Rajput has remained one of the most discussed aspects of the case.
Disha had worked with Sushant professionally before her death. Her death on June 8, followed by Sushant's death on June 14, led to widespread speculation about whether the two incidents were connected.
However, the existence of a professional connection and the close timing of the deaths do not by themselves establish a criminal link between the two cases. The CBI's fresh investigation into Disha's death will have to rely on evidence rather than theories or social media claims.
The Bombay High Court's order also specifically emphasised that individuals should not be treated as accused unless investigators find sufficient material against them.
What Happens Next?
The registration of the FIR marks the beginning of the CBI's formal criminal investigation rather than its conclusion. The agency will now have to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding Disha's death and examine whether there was any criminal wrongdoing.
The investigation could potentially answer questions that have remained unresolved since 2020. It could also confirm the original police conclusion if the evidence ultimately supports it.
The legal position remains clear: an FIR is an allegation and the starting point of an investigation, not proof of guilt. The CBI will have to establish the facts through evidence, witness statements and other investigative material before reaching any conclusion.
For the Salian family, however, the CBI probe represents a significant development after years of seeking a fresh investigation. For the public, the case is likely to attract renewed attention because of Disha's professional association with Sushant Singh Rajput and the continuing interest surrounding both deaths.
As the investigation progresses, the focus will now shift from speculation to evidence and from unanswered questions to the findings of the central agency.
