Shekhar Suman Defends His Show, Makes 1 Big Remark on PM Modi

Shekhar Suman has defended his YouTube satire show Shekhar Tonite, insisting that it targets systemic problems rather than any political party. He also dismissed speculation linking an ED raid on his show's producer to his political commentary.

Actor and television host Shekhar Suman has responded to questions surrounding his YouTube show Shekhar Tonite, clarifying that his political satire is not intended to target the BJP or the central government. In a recent interview with The Lallantop, Suman defended his right to question those in power and said his commentary focuses on the system rather than any individual political leader.

The actor also made a pointed remark about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he did not believe the Prime Minister was so weak that his government would contact him over a relatively small entertainment programme.

Suman's comments come amid discussions about the political tone of his show, which uses humour and satire to examine governance, accountability and public issues.

1. Why Shekhar Suman Says His Show Is Not Anti-BJP

Explaining his approach, Suman compared the government to a class monitor who must be held accountable when something goes wrong. According to him, questioning those in power is a normal part of democratic life, regardless of which political party forms the government.

He also referred to his earlier television programme, Movers & Shakers, which began in 1997 and returned in 2012. During its run, the show used humour to comment on political developments under different administrations.

Suman argued that his approach has remained consistent across governments. He said his intention is not to campaign against a particular party but to raise questions on behalf of the public.

The actor described his show as being “pro-people” rather than anti-government. He also maintained that criticism becomes legitimate when elected representatives fail to meet public expectations.

For Suman, political satire is a form of entertainment that can also encourage discussion about responsibility and transparency.

2. His Strong Remark About PM Narendra Modi

Suman's statement about Prime Minister Narendra Modi became one of the most discussed aspects of the interview.

The actor said he did not believe Modi or his government would be disturbed by the commentary of a relatively small YouTube show. He also suggested that the Prime Minister has much larger national and international matters requiring his attention.

Suman said he had not received calls from the BJP government asking him to stop the programme or remove its content. Instead, he claimed that several politicians had contacted him to express appreciation for the show.

He also referred to Modi's publicly expressed views about criticism, saying he believed the Prime Minister would understand the role of satire in a democracy.

The comments reflect Suman's position that political humour should not automatically be interpreted as hostility towards a particular leader or party.

3. Shekhar Suman Addresses the ED Raid Controversy

The interview also touched on speculation surrounding Enforcement Directorate searches linked to Dharmesh Sangani, the producer associated with Shekhar Tonite.

The searches reportedly took place in connection with an investigation involving alleged violations of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). The investigation and the allegations should not be treated as proof of wrongdoing unless established through the appropriate legal process.

Because the searches attracted attention while Suman's political monologues were being discussed, some observers questioned whether the two developments were connected.

Suman declined to draw such a connection. He indicated that he had not discussed the details of the matter with Sangani and suggested that the producer could have separate business-related issues.

His position was that the timing alone did not establish a link between the investigation and the show's content.

What Makes Shekhar Tonite Different?

With Shekhar Tonite, Suman has returned to the talk-show format that made him widely recognised through Movers & Shakers. The YouTube programme combines interviews, humour and political commentary, bringing a familiar late-night television style to a digital platform.

Political satire has long been part of Indian entertainment, with comedians and television hosts using humour to discuss public policy, leadership and social concerns. Such programmes can generate debate because their jokes often address subjects that are already politically sensitive.

Suman's defence of his show highlights the distinction between criticising the functioning of a government and opposing a political party as a whole.

As the discussion around Shekhar Tonite continues, the actor has made his position clear: he wants the programme to question the system, whoever happens to be in power.
