Shankar Praises Yash as Ravana, Calls Him a ‘Lovable Villain’ in Ramayana

Filmmaker S. Shankar has praised Nitesh Tiwari's Ramayana after watching the film, calling it a visual spectacle. He particularly appreciated Yash's portrayal of Ravana, describing the actor as a 'lovable villain' whose performance is a delight to watch.

Filmmaker S. Shankar has joined the growing list of celebrities praising Nitesh Tiwari's ambitious mythological epic Ramayana. After watching the film, the director shared his appreciation for its visual effects, production design, music and performances. However, it was Yash's portrayal of Ravana that particularly caught his attention.

Shankar described Yash as a "lovable villain" and said watching him on screen was a delight. His comments have added to the conversation surrounding the Kannada superstar's transformation into one of Indian mythology's most iconic characters.

The filmmaker shared his reaction through a post on X (formerly Twitter), where he congratulated the entire team for their efforts in bringing the epic to the big screen.

Shankar Calls Ramayana a Visual Spectacle

In his review, Shankar expressed admiration for the film's scale and technical execution. He described Ramayana as a spectacle and said he had never seen visuals of this kind in Indian cinema.

Praising producer Namit Malhotra and director Nitesh Tiwari, he credited them with taking Indian cinema towards international standards.

He also appreciated the film's visual effects, production values, overall look and sound design. Shankar specifically mentioned the music composed by AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer, praising their contribution to the film's cinematic experience.

His appreciation is particularly noteworthy given his own experience of directing large-scale visual spectacles, including films such as Enthiran and 2.0.

Yash's Ravana Wins Special Appreciation

While Shankar praised several aspects of the film, his comments about Yash became the highlight of his review.

"It's a delight to watch @TheNameIsYash in every frame. He is such a lovable villain and has delivered a quality performance," the filmmaker wrote.

The description has attracted attention because Ravana is traditionally portrayed as a powerful antagonist in the Ramayana. Yash's performance appears to have made a strong impression on Shankar, who appreciated the actor's screen presence and portrayal.

The filmmaker also extended his best wishes to Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi, who play Lord Ram and Goddess Sita, respectively.

He concluded his message by congratulating the entire team for their effort and for making Indian cinema proud. Nitesh Tiwari responded to Shankar's appreciation by thanking him.

Ramayana Features a Powerful Star Cast

Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. The film also stars Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, Arun Govil as King Dashrath and Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi.

The supporting cast includes Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, Sheeba Chaddha as Manthara and Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari.

Produced by Namit Malhotra and Yash, the film has been mounted on a massive scale. Its music is composed by AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer, while DNEG has handled the visual effects.

The first instalment explores the early life of Lord Ram, his marriage to Sita, the circumstances surrounding his exile and Ravana's role in the larger conflict. The story builds towards Sita's abduction and sets the stage for the events of the sequel.

Ramayana Continues to Generate Discussion

Since its theatrical release on November 5, 2026, Ramayana has generated considerable discussion among audiences and members of the film industry.

Shankar's praise has brought additional attention to Yash's performance, particularly his interpretation of Ravana. With the film's ambitious scale and ensemble cast, the project has become one of the most talked-about Indian cinematic releases of the year.
