Saif Ali Khan has taken a candid look back at some of his career choices and admitted that he considers his decision to act in the 2012 romantic comedy Cocktail a mistake. The actor explained that he accepted the role largely because he was involved in producing the film and wanted to ensure that the project was completed.
In a recent conversation with Gulf News, Saif described the script as a “slightly regressive” choice, while also making it clear that he still viewed the film itself as a breezy and entertaining movie.
Why Saif Ali Khan Says Cocktail Was a Mistake
Looking back at Cocktail, Saif revealed that the role of Gautam was not the main reason he agreed to star in the film. Since his production company was involved with the project, he felt responsible for helping the movie move forward.
According to the actor, he knew that Veronica, played by Deepika Padukone, was the more exciting character in the story. However, he still decided to play Gautam because he wanted the film to get made.
Saif's comments suggest that his decision was more about his responsibilities as a producer than about finding the perfect acting opportunity for himself.

Saif Also Talks About Humshakals
During the same conversation, Saif Ali Khan also reflected on his 2014 comedy Humshakals. Unlike Cocktail, he said he believed the bigger problem with that film was his casting.
The actor admitted that he felt miscast because the style of comedy required for the film did not naturally suit him. He explained that some actors could have handled that kind of humour more effectively.
Saif also acknowledged that he may not have been able to convince himself enough to fully deliver the style of comedy expected from the role.
Saif Says Akshay Kumar Could Have Done It
Interestingly, while discussing Humshakals, Saif mentioned Akshay Kumar as someone who could potentially have handled that type of comedy better.
He suggested that director Sajid Khan may have expected him to approach the material in a style similar to what Akshay could have brought to it. However, Saif also stressed that he continues to stand by the film and its director.
His comments show that the actor is willing to acknowledge mistakes in hindsight without completely distancing himself from the projects he has worked on.
