Rohit Roy Wanted to Pursue MBA in the US, But Visa Rejection Turn His Life

Rohit Roy never planned to become an actor. His dream was to pursue an MBA in the United States, but after his student visa was rejected, his career took an unexpected turn. From modelling and television to Bollywood, Roy eventually became a familiar face in the Indian entertainment industry.

Bollywood News: Rohit Roy is one of the familiar names associated with Indian television and Bollywood. Over the years, he has appeared in several television shows and films and has also explored filmmaking. However, his entry into the entertainment industry was not something he had originally planned.

Before becoming an actor, Rohit Roy had a very different career goal. He wanted to travel to the United States and pursue an MBA. However, his student visa was rejected, forcing him to reconsider his plans. What initially came as a disappointment eventually changed the direction of his life.

Rohit Roy Wanted to Study MBA in America

Born in Nagpur in 1968, Rohit Roy is the younger brother of actor Ronit Roy. According to the NDTV report, Rohit had an interest in academics and completed his graduation in science, with physics being one of his preferred subjects.

After completing his studies, he planned to pursue an MBA in the United States. He had prepared for the move, but his student visa was not approved. With his plans for studying abroad put on hold, Rohit decided to stay in Mumbai.

The unexpected setback eventually opened the door to a completely different career.

From Assistant Director to Modelling

After remaining in Mumbai, Rohit Roy began looking for work. He reportedly worked as an assistant director with filmmaker Kunal Kapoor before getting modelling opportunities.

Modelling gradually brought him closer to the entertainment industry. Filmmaker Anant Balani noticed him and offered him a role in the film Jazbaat. Although the movie did not give Rohit the major breakthrough he had hoped for, it marked the beginning of his acting journey.

Interestingly, Rohit has said in interviews that becoming an actor was never really part of his original plan.

‘Swabhimaan’ Became the Turning Point

Rohit Roy's major breakthrough came with the Doordarshan television series Swabhimaan. The show, which aired on DD National from 1995 to 1997, became an important milestone in his career.

Rohit played Rishabh Malhotra, a character that quickly connected with television audiences. His performance made him a recognised television face during the show's run.

The story behind his casting is also unusual. According to the report, Rohit came to know about the show through his then-girlfriend Mansi Joshi, who had received an offer but decided not to take it. After hearing about the project, Rohit expressed interest in auditioning.

He initially did not get selected, but he eventually became part of the show.

From Television to Bollywood

After establishing himself on television, Rohit Roy expanded his career into films. He appeared in movies including Shootout at Lokhandwala, Kaabil, Dus Kahaniyaan, Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena and Plan.

Among these projects, his appearance in Shootout at Lokhandwala was particularly noted. Alongside films, Rohit continued to work extensively in television and appeared in shows such as Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, Kkusum and Sanjivani.

His career therefore developed across both television and cinema rather than remaining limited to one medium.

Rohit Roy Also Tried His Hand at Direction

Rohit Roy did not restrict himself to acting. He also explored filmmaking and took on directing responsibilities.

He directed The Rice Plate, a short film included in Sanjay Gupta's anthology Dus Kahaniyaan. This gave him an opportunity to explore another aspect of filmmaking beyond performing in front of the camera.

Today, Rohit Roy's career reflects a journey across television, films and direction—a path that began after an unexpected setback changed his original plan of pursuing an MBA in America.

A Career That Began With an Unexpected Turn

Rohit Roy's story is an example of how an unexpected career detour can lead to a completely different professional journey. The rejection of his student visa ended his immediate plans of studying in the United States, but staying in Mumbai eventually brought him into modelling and acting.

From Swabhimaan to Bollywood films and filmmaking, Rohit went on to establish himself across multiple areas of the entertainment industry.
