Bollywood Mascot: Ram Gopal Varma is back in the crime space, and this time the filmmaker is taking on one of the most intriguing stories from Mumbai's police history. His upcoming film Police Company, starring Harshvardhan Rane, has gone on floors in Mumbai. The film is inspired by the life and career of former Mumbai encounter specialist Daya Nayak and is being mounted as a large-scale crime thriller.
What makes the project particularly interesting is that Varma is not looking at the story as a routine police drama. The filmmaker has been fascinated by Daya Nayak's extraordinary journey for years, and Police Company is finally bringing that long-gestating idea to the screen with T-Series backing.
According to the latest update, the film will be made in two parts, allowing Varma to explore the different phases of Daya Nayak's life and career in greater detail. The story is expected to cover his journey from a small village in Mangalore to becoming one of the most recognised names associated with Mumbai Police's encounter operations.
Harshvardhan Rane plays the central character. Rather than simply glorifying the action associated with Mumbai's encounter squads, the director wants to examine what happens when an officer is given extraordinary authority and has to make life-and-death decisions.
The timing of the project is also significant for Harshvardhan Rane. After gaining momentum with his recent work, the actor now has several major projects lined up, and Police Company gives him the opportunity to headline a serious crime drama under one of the industry's most recognisable filmmakers in the genre.
With shooting now underway in Mumbai and the story being planned across two parts, expectations around Police Company are naturally high. Varma is returning to the gritty territory that audiences have long associated with him, while Rane takes on a character based on a real-life police officer whose career remains one of the most talked-about chapters in Mumbai's fight against organised crime.
