Actor-director Raju Kher has revisited one of the most difficult periods of his life, revealing how a failed television project left him facing a serious financial crisis. In a candid conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Raju recalled selling his house and investing the money into a television programme that never made it to the audience.

The experience also affected his relationship with his elder brother, veteran actor Anupam Kher. At the time, Raju expected Anupam to provide financial support, but later realised that he had been looking at his brother’s life from the outside and assuming that everything was fine simply because Anupam was professionally successful.
He Sold His House for a Television Project
Raju recalled that the crisis began around the year 2000, when a new television channel was preparing to launch. Several programmes were reportedly being developed for the channel, and Raju was among those who had invested in the opportunity.
He had sold his house and put the money into a programme titled Life Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega. At the time, he believed the project would provide stability for his family and that his financial future was secure.
But things changed unexpectedly when the proposed channel disappeared.
Raju said he eventually discovered that the channel had shut down, leaving behind a locked office and no clear explanation. The money he had invested was effectively stuck, and he had to move into a rented home while also dealing with the pressure of finding work.
Why Raju Kher Expected Help From Anupam
With his finances under pressure, Raju turned towards the person he believed he could rely on—his elder brother Anupam Kher.
Raju said he felt he had very few people to approach at the time and assumed that Anupam, who had already established himself as a successful actor, would help him through the crisis.
However, that support did not come in the way Raju had expected.
Looking back, Raju clarified that this was how he felt at that particular point in his life. He also acknowledged that Anupam was himself going through a difficult professional phase.
Anupam had reportedly stopped accepting certain projects because he wanted to wait for more substantial roles. So, while Raju saw his brother as financially secure from the outside, Anupam was also dealing with his own uncertainties.
One Magazine Interview Changed His Perspective
Interestingly, Raju said his perspective about Anupam changed after he happened to read one of his brother’s interviews in a magazine.
In that interview, Anupam had spoken about wishing he had a child of his own. Raju said the comment made him realise that he had been looking at his brother primarily through the lens of his professional success and had not considered the personal struggles Anupam might have been experiencing.
That moment led Raju to reconsider his earlier expectations.
He realised that the family had taken Anupam for granted, assuming that someone who appeared financially successful could not possibly have problems of his own.
The Brothers’ Relationship Has a Different Chapter Today
Raju’s latest recollection is particularly interesting because his relationship with Anupam has also included periods of strong support.
In another recent interview, Raju spoke about his battle with bladder cancer in 2004 and revealed that Anupam played a major role during his treatment. According to Raju, Anupam returned to Mumbai after learning about his illness and took responsibility for his medical expenses. Raju has described his elder brother as a father figure in his life.
That later chapter provides important context to Raju’s latest comments. His recollection of the financial crisis is not simply about blaming his brother; it is also about understanding how both siblings experienced difficult periods at different times.
A Difficult Lesson About Family
Raju Kher’s story ultimately goes beyond the failed television project or the money he lost. His experience made him realise that financial success does not necessarily mean a person has no problems.
The actor-director’s recollection also highlights how expectations within families can sometimes be shaped by appearances. Someone may look successful from the outside while quietly dealing with professional, emotional or personal challenges.
For Raju, that difficult period around 2000 became a turning point. What initially felt like a painful experience involving money, career uncertainty and disappointment eventually changed the way he looked at his elder brother.
Today, the brothers remain connected, and Raju’s recollections show that their relationship has gone through its own complicated phases of expectation, misunderstanding and support.
