Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav has received temporary relief from the Supreme Court after seeking additional time to settle a pending financial dispute. The apex court bench, headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, agreed to grant him a final two-week window to submit a demand draft of ₹2 crore with the court registry and present a concrete plan to clear his pending dues. The court also extended his protection from surrendering until the next hearing scheduled for October 5, while directing the actor to surrender his passport.
Earlier this month, the top court had directed the actor to deposit ₹5 crore to remain exempt from surrendering. However, during the latest hearing, his legal team requested more time, explaining that arranging such a large amount required practical time to gather payments from his ongoing entertainment contracts. While granting the two-week extension reluctantly, the bench observed that the actor must take court commitments seriously and treat legal undertakings with complete honesty.
Background of the Financial Dispute Facing Rajpal Yadav
The legal troubles surrounding Rajpal Yadav began around 2010 when he decided to make his directorial debut with a Bollywood comedy titled Ata Pata Laapata. To finance the production and marketing of the film, he took financial assistance of ₹5 crore from a Delhi-based company named Murli Projects Pvt Ltd.
Unfortunately, the film failed to perform well at the box office and suffered heavy commercial losses. Because the film did not generate enough revenue, the actor found it difficult to return the borrowed money. Over time, with interest and additional charges piling up, the outstanding amount reportedly grew to around ₹9 crore to ₹11 crore. In 2013, seven cheques issued by the actor bounced when presented at the bank, leading the complainant to file legal complaints under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
Court Convictions and Past Imprisonment
The case of Rajpal Yadav has seen multiple stages across trial courts and appellate benches over the past decade. In 2018, a magisterial court convicted the actor, his wife Radha Rajpal Yadav, and their production firm, handing down a jail sentence. The sessions court upheld this conviction in 2019, which prompted the actor to challenge the decision in the Delhi High Court.
During the long proceedings, Rajpal Yadav gave several undertakings promising to clear the amount, but continuous delays led the courts to take a strict stance. He had to spend time in Tihar Jail on earlier occasions due to non-compliance. In July, the Delhi High Court upheld his conviction in the seven cheque-bounce cases, sentencing him to three months' imprisonment to run concurrently, while directing him to pay compensation to the lender. The High Court had kept the sentence on hold temporarily to allow him to approach the Supreme Court.
What the Supreme Court Directed Today
When the matter came up before the Supreme Court bench, senior advocates representing Rajpal Yadav submitted that the actor is actively working to organize liquid funds and has already spent over four months in custody in connection with the dispute. His counsel assured the court that the actor would deposit at least ₹2 crore immediately to prove his genuine intent and provide security for the remaining balance.
The bench granted the request for two more weeks as a final opportunity, asking him to deposit the ₹2 crore demand draft and place a clear repayment roadmap on record. If Rajpal Yadav complies with these directions within the given timeframe, the court will review the structured proposal during the next hearing on October 5. Fans and industry peers continue to watch the developments closely, hoping the veteran comic actor resolves the dispute once and for all.
