Rajkummar Rao’s acclaimed film Shahid has finally found a streaming home after more than 13 years. Directed by Hansal Mehta, the biographical drama is now available on Prime Video, giving a new generation of viewers the opportunity to watch the film online.
The film originally released in Indian theatres on October 18, 2013. Despite receiving critical acclaim and winning two National Awards, Shahid remained unavailable on a major streaming platform for years.
Its long-awaited OTT arrival has now become a talking point, particularly after writer-editor Apurva M Asrani raised questions about why it took so long for the film to reach a digital audience.
Apurva Asrani Asks, “Why Now?”
Following the OTT release, Apurva Asrani took to X to reflect on the film’s unusual journey.
Asrani, who co-wrote and edited Shahid, pointed out that it took 13 years for the film to find a streaming platform. He questioned why a film that had received significant recognition had remained without a major OTT home for such a long period.
He also connected the film’s subject with the wider environment for stories dealing with dissent, due process and the rights of people accused under terror laws.
Asrani ultimately asked why Shahid was reaching streaming audiences in 2026 and whether the atmosphere surrounding such stories had changed. These are Asrani’s own observations and questions, rather than an established explanation for the film’s delayed OTT release.
What Is Shahid About?
Shahid is based on the life of Shahid Azmi, a lawyer and human rights activist who worked on cases involving people accused under terrorism-related laws.
Rajkummar Rao portrays Shahid Azmi in the film, which follows his journey from a troubled past to becoming a lawyer who takes up the cases of people he believes deserve legal representation and due process.
The story also explores the personal risks involved in his work and the challenges faced by Azmi during his professional journey. Shahid Azmi was assassinated in Mumbai in 2010.
Rather than presenting the story as a conventional commercial drama, Hansal Mehta's film focuses on the character’s professional and personal struggles.
Rajkummar Rao Won The National Award
One of the biggest milestones in Shahid’s journey came at the 61st National Film Awards, where Rajkummar Rao won the Best Actor award and Hansal Mehta received the Best Director honour.
The recognition established the film as one of the notable Hindi dramas of its period and further strengthened Rao’s reputation as an actor capable of carrying challenging, performance-driven roles.
For Rao, the film became an important part of his career and one of the performances most closely associated with his rise as a leading performer in content-driven Hindi cinema.
Shahid Had Its World Premiere In Toronto
Before its Indian theatrical release, Shahid had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2012, where it was presented in the City to City programme.
The film subsequently travelled to several other festivals, including the Mumbai Film Festival, New York Indian Film Festival, Indian Film Festival of Stuttgart, Dubai International Film Festival and Chicago South Asian Film Festival. It also received the Silver Gateway Trophy at the Mumbai Film Festival.
Its festival journey helped build interest in the film before its theatrical release in India.
Why Did The OTT Release Take So Long?
The exact reason for Shahid’s 13-year wait for a major streaming release has not been publicly established.
In 2022, Hansal Mehta had reportedly spoken about the film’s absence from streaming services and described the situation as a “personal tragedy.” He had also said that he did not know who held the film’s digital rights at the time.
With the film now available on Prime Video, the rights and distribution situation has evidently changed. However, there is no confirmed public statement establishing that the delay was caused by political considerations.
That distinction is important because the political explanation being discussed currently comes primarily from Asrani’s interpretation of the film’s long absence.
Apurva Asrani Connects The Film To Its Original Theme
In his post, Asrani revisited the central themes of Shahid, including the rights of accused persons and the importance of due process.
He also reflected on the changing environment for filmmakers who want to tell stories involving dissent, activism and politically sensitive subjects. His comments have triggered discussion around whether films dealing with such subjects have faced different challenges over the years.
However, the OTT release itself does not provide evidence for any single explanation behind the 13-year gap.
A Second Life For Shahid On OTT
The arrival of Shahid on Prime Video gives the film a second opportunity to reach audiences.
When the film released in 2013, streaming platforms in India had not yet reached the scale they would achieve in the following decade. Today, an OTT release can potentially make an older film accessible to viewers who may have never had the opportunity to watch it in theatres.
For Rajkummar Rao fans, it also provides an opportunity to revisit one of his most acclaimed early performances.
13 Years Later, Shahid Is Finally Streaming
After a 13-year wait, Shahid OTT release has finally become a reality. The film’s arrival on Prime Video is significant not only because of its long absence but also because of the conversation it has generated around the film’s subject and distribution history.
Rajkummar Rao’s performance, Hansal Mehta’s direction and Apurva Asrani’s writing and editing helped make Shahid an important film of its time. Now that it is available to a much wider digital audience, viewers can revisit the story of Shahid Azmi and the questions the film raises about justice, law and individual courage.
For now, the exact reason behind the film’s unusually long OTT wait remains unclear, while Asrani’s “Why now?” question has added another layer to its long journey from theatres in 2013 to streaming in 2026.
