Priyanka shared the announcement through an Instagram post, reflecting on the vision behind Purple Pebble Pictures and the importance of the original film in the company's journey.

Sharing her excitement, she wrote, “10 years ago, with @purplepebblepictures, I decided I want to tell stories that mean something. Ventilator was one of those very important stories to us at the company. A decade later, we’re coming back to it, with so much more…”

Her message highlights how Ventilator remains an important part of the production house's identity. The sequel also marks a return to a film that helped establish Purple Pebble Pictures as a banner interested in meaningful stories and distinctive voices from Indian cinema.

Rajesh Mapuskar returns as writer and director

One of the biggest highlights of the announcement is the return of Rajesh Mapuskar. Having directed the original film, Mapuskar will once again lead the creative direction of the franchise, this time taking responsibility for both writing and directing.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Dr Madhu Chopra and Rajesh Mapuskar will produce Ventilator 2 under Purple Pebble Pictures and Magij Pictures.

While the release year has been confirmed as 2027, the makers have not yet revealed the sequel's cast, storyline or production schedule. It also remains unclear whether members of the original ensemble will return.

Revisiting the story of the original Ventilator

Released in 2016, Ventilator was a Marathi family drama set against the backdrop of Ganesh Chaturthi. The film followed the Kamerkar family, whose members gathered at a hospital after an elderly relative, Gajanan, was placed on a ventilator.

What initially appeared to be a family gathering during a medical emergency gradually became an emotional exploration of relationships, generational differences, unresolved disagreements and reconciliation.

The film balanced humour with emotional moments, presenting the complexities of family life through the interactions of its characters. Its relatable storytelling and ensemble performances helped it connect with audiences.

The original film featured Ashutosh Gowariker, Jitendra Joshi, Sulabha Arya, Viju Khote, Satish Alekar and Achyut Potdar, among others. Priyanka Chopra also made a special appearance.

Ventilator won three National Film Awards

Beyond its audience response, Ventilator also earned significant recognition at the National Film Awards. The film won three awards, including Best Director for Rajesh Mapuskar, Best Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

The recognition established the film as an important achievement in Marathi cinema and strengthened Mapuskar's reputation as a filmmaker capable of handling emotionally layered stories.

For Priyanka, the project was equally significant because it represented the kind of cinema she wanted to support through her production company.

Purple Pebble Pictures completes 10 years

Founded by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Purple Pebble Pictures has supported films across different languages and genres over the past decade. Its projects include Pahuna: The Little Visitors, Paani, Firebrand, The Sky Is Pink, The White Tiger, To Kill a Tiger and Anuja.

The production banner has consistently explored stories that go beyond mainstream commercial formats, with a focus on diverse subjects and filmmaking voices.

With Ventilator 2, the company is revisiting one of its earliest and most recognised projects. The reunion with Rajesh Mapuskar makes the sequel particularly significant as Purple Pebble Pictures enters its next chapter.

As the film gears up for its planned 2027 release, audiences will be waiting for further announcements about its cast, storyline and filming schedule. For now, the return of Priyanka Chopra and Mapuskar to the Ventilator universe has created fresh interest in the Marathi film sequel.
