Prabhas’ The Raja Saab FLOP: Producer Reveals 3 Major Mistakes

Producer TG Vishwa Prasad has opened up about why Prabhas’ The Raja Saab failed to meet expectations. He cited its Sankranthi release timing, delayed premieres and ticket-price hikes as key factors behind the disappointing box-office performance.

Prabhas’ horror-comedy The Raja Saab arrived in theatres with enormous expectations, but its box-office performance fell short of what its makers had hoped for. Now, producer TG Vishwa Prasad has spoken about the factors he believes contributed to the film’s disappointing run.

Speaking to the media in Hyderabad while promoting his upcoming production Garividi Lakshmi, Vishwa Prasad admitted that releasing the film during the Sankranthi festive season was one of the fundamental mistakes. He also pointed to delayed premiere shows and an unsuccessful attempt to increase ticket prices.

The producer’s remarks have renewed discussion about the film’s performance and the challenges of releasing a big-budget movie during a crowded festive period.

1. Sankranthi Release Timing May Have Hurt the Film

According to Vishwa Prasad, choosing the Sankranthi season for The Raja Saab was one of the major decisions that affected its performance. The film was released on January 9, 2026, during a busy period for Telugu cinema.

Sankranthi is traditionally an important release window, with several major films competing for audiences. While the holiday season can attract large crowds, it can also create intense competition for screens and audience attention.

Vishwa Prasad suggested that the outcome might have been different had the film arrived at another time of the year. His comments indicate that release strategy was an important factor in the production team's post-release assessment.

However, he did not attribute the film’s underperformance to timing alone, acknowledging that several factors contributed to the result.

2. Delayed Premieres Frustrated Audiences

The producer also admitted that premiere shows were delayed on the day of release. Such delays can frustrate moviegoers who have booked tickets in advance, particularly when audiences are expecting a major star’s film to begin at the advertised time.

For a high-profile release, the first screenings often shape early audience reactions and online discussion. Delays can affect that initial experience before viewers have even watched the film.

Vishwa Prasad acknowledged that the premiere delays created frustration among audiences. His comments suggest that the release-day experience was another issue the team believes could have been handled better.

3. Ticket-Price Hikes Added to the Problem

Another factor highlighted by the producer was the attempt to increase ticket prices. He said it was the first time his production house had tried to raise ticket prices for one of its films and admitted that the decision should not have been taken.

The attempted price increase reportedly contributed to delays and audience dissatisfaction.

Higher ticket prices can raise expectations, especially for expensive productions featuring major stars. When moviegoers pay a premium, they may expect a smooth theatrical experience as well as a film that meets their expectations.

Vishwa Prasad’s comments suggest that the pricing decision added unnecessary complications during the release period. He acknowledged that there were several reasons behind the film’s performance, rather than blaming a single factor.

How Much Did The Raja Saab Earn at the Box Office?

The Raja Saab, directed by Maruthi, reportedly earned around ₹208 crore worldwide. Reports have placed its production budget at more than ₹400 crore, although budget figures can vary by source.

The film starred Prabhas alongside Sanjay Dutt, Nidhhi Agerwal, Malavika Mohanan, Riddhi Kumar and Zarina Wahab.

Despite the scale of the production and the anticipation surrounding Prabhas’ horror-comedy outing, the film received mixed-to-negative reactions from audiences and critics. Its reported worldwide earnings fell well short of the expectations associated with a production of its reported budget.

Box-office gross does not equal the amount recovered by producers, as theatrical revenue is shared with distributors and exhibitors, and overall profitability also depends on marketing, distribution and other costs.

Will Spirit Make Up for The Raja Saab’s Failure?

During the interaction, Vishwa Prasad was also asked whether Prabhas’ upcoming film Spirit could make up for the disappointment surrounding The Raja Saab.

The producer clarified that he is involved with Spirit as a distributor rather than as its producer. The film is directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, known for Animal and Kabir Singh, and is expected to feature Prabhas in the lead role.

Vishwa Prasad also maintained that The Raja Saab had received a substantial release in terms of scale and reach. He reiterated that the festive timing, premiere delays, ticket pricing and other factors all played a part in its performance.

For now, Spirit remains a separate project, and its eventual box-office performance will depend on its own release strategy, audience response and execution.

What The Raja Saab’s Performance Means for Big-Budget Films

The producer’s comments highlight how a film’s commercial outcome can be influenced by decisions beyond its cast and production budget. Release timing, ticket pricing, show management and audience expectations can all shape the theatrical experience.

For The Raja Saab, Vishwa Prasad has identified several areas where the team believes different decisions might have produced a better outcome. His remarks offer a glimpse into the lessons the makers have taken from a film that failed to match its commercial ambitions.
