Om Puri, one of the finest actors in Indian cinema, is remembered for his exceptional performances that left a lasting mark. However, Om Puri’s life was not easy—his childhood was riddled with hardships, financial struggles, and family troubles. Carving a Unique Identity in Bollywood

Om Puri entered an industry that often favored glamorous faces, yet he managed to build a career that stood apart from the norm. His distinctive face and deep, resonant voice became his trademarks. Despite not fitting into the conventional standards of beauty, he established himself as one of the most talented and respected actors in the industry.

His acting journey began with a Kannada film, Kalla Kalla Bachitko, released in 1975. Later, Puri’s breakthrough in Bollywood came with critically acclaimed films like Aakrosh, Ardh Satya, and Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. His exceptional talent earned him two National Film Awards, the prestigious Padma Shri, and a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Om Puri Childhood Struggles: Poverty and a Broken Home

Though Om Puri’s father worked with Indian Railways and had served in the army, the family still faced severe financial issues. When Om Puri was just six years old, his father was arrested for allegedly stealing cement. His arrest led to the family losing their home, plunging them into poverty. With no one to support the household, Om Puri took it upon himself to help his family survive.

To make ends meet, he washed dishes at a tea stall, while his brother worked as a porter. Additionally, Om Puri would collect coal from railway tracks to sell for a small income. Despite these struggles, Puri never gave up on his education and managed to enroll at the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII).

A Debt That Was Never Paid

Puri’s time at FTII wasn’t without challenges. He couldn’t even afford the institution’s fees and owed around 280 rupees, a debt he reportedly never repaid. But this did not stop him from pursuing his passion for acting, which eventually paved the way for an illustrious career.

Om Puri Teased for His Looks but Respected for His Talent

Throughout his journey, Om Puri faced ridicule for his unconventional looks. During his time at the National School of Drama (NSD), fellow student and future co-star Shabana Azmi teased him about his appearance. However, their relationship grew over time, and they shared the screen in several films, creating memorable performances together.

Puri’s Bollywood debut came in 1976 with Ghashiram Kotwal, a cinematic adaptation of a popular Marathi play. Over the years, he collaborated with stalwarts like Amrish Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Smita Patil, and Shabana Azmi, cementing his place among the finest actors in Indian cinema.

Personal Life: Marriages and Controversies

Om Puri’s personal life was often in the spotlight. In 1991, he married Seema Kapoor, sister of actor Annu Kapoor, but the marriage lasted only eight months. Two years later, in 1993, he married journalist Nandita Puri, with whom he had a son, Ishaan. However, their relationship wasn’t without its share of turmoil.

In 2009, Nandita Puri published a biography titled Unlikely Hero: The Story of Om Puri, which revealed some personal and controversial aspects of his life. The revelations led to public disagreements between the couple, drawing media attention to their strained relationship.
