Bollywood News: Nimrat Kaur has once again spoken about the devastating loss that changed her family’s life forever. The actress was only 11 when her father, Major Bhupender Singh, was kidnapped and killed by terrorists in Kashmir in January 1994. In a recent conversation with ANI, Nimrat revisited the traumatic incident and spoke about the memories of her father, her mother’s strength and the impact his death continues to have on the family.
Nimrat Kaur Was Just 11 When She Lost Her Father
Major Bhupender Singh was an Indian Army officer posted in Kashmir. According to Nimrat’s account, he was returning from an official assignment when he was abducted by people who were dressed in Army fatigues and posed as soldiers.

The incident happened during an ordinary working day, making the tragedy even more unexpected for the family. Nimrat recalled that her father left for work that morning, but she never saw him return home.
For the young actress, the next time she saw her father was in a coffin. She said that this sudden and violent loss meant that there was never a sense of closure for the family.
Terrorists Made Demands for Seven Days
Nimrat revealed that her father’s kidnappers made several demands over the following seven days. Among their demands was the release of people who were being held in captivity in India.
The family remained in Kashmir during this period. Nimrat recalled that she, her mother and her sister were initially staying in Verinag, but were later moved to Srinagar as the security situation became increasingly unsafe.
On the seventh day, the family received the devastating news that Major Bhupender Singh had been killed.
‘The Next Time I Saw Him Was in a Coffin’
Speaking about the painful memory, Nimrat recalled seeing her father leave for work that morning and then seeing him only after his death.
The actress said that because everything happened so suddenly, the family never received the kind of closure that normally comes with a loss. Even after more than three decades, she says the passage of time has not erased the pain.
Nimrat also recalled learning that her father had spoken about his family during his captivity. According to her, he told his captors that he had a wife and two daughters. She believes that his family was in his thoughts during his final moments.
Nimrat Praises Her Mother’s Strength
The actress also spoke about her mother, who was in her early to mid-30s when she suddenly lost her husband and became responsible for raising two young daughters.
Nimrat described the period as extremely traumatic for her mother but said that her mother found the courage to rebuild their lives. According to the actress, the responsibility of raising two children gave her mother the strength to move forward despite the devastating circumstances.
After Major Bhupender Singh’s death, Nimrat, her mother and sister eventually moved to Noida, where they stayed with her maternal grandparents for a period of time.
Major Bhupender Singh Was Honoured With the Shaurya Chakra
Major Bhupender Singh’s service and sacrifice were later recognised with the Shaurya Chakra, which was awarded to him posthumously.
Nimrat has continued to remember her father publicly over the years. In a recent remembrance, she described him as a soldier, husband and father whose values and courage continue to live on through his family. She also expressed gratitude for the recognition given to his sacrifice.
Nimrat Says the Loss Still Hurts After Decades
For Nimrat Kaur, the passage of more than 30 years has not completely healed the emotional wound left by her father’s death.
She acknowledged that technically many decades have passed, but said that the loss continues to affect her mother, sister and the wider family. Her memories of her father remain an important part of her life and identity.
The actress has often spoken about how losing her father at such a young age shaped her childhood. She has also previously described how she had to grow up quickly and support her mother emotionally after the tragedy.
‘Honoured to Be Known as Major Bhupender’s Daughter’
Remembering her father, Nimrat has continued to describe herself as proud of his legacy. In her recent tribute, she referred to herself as “Major Bhupender’s daughter” and remembered his service to the nation.
Her latest recollection has once again brought attention to the personal stories behind the families of Army personnel who lose loved ones while serving in conflict-affected areas.
For Nimrat Kaur, her father’s memory remains closely connected to the values, courage and resilience that she says have shaped her life.
