Bollywood News: Nimrat Kaur has opened up about one of the most painful chapters of her childhood — the loss of her father, Major Bhupender Singh. The actress was only 11 when her father, an Indian Army officer posted in Kashmir, was abducted and killed in January 1994.
More than three decades later, Nimrat has recalled the tragedy in an interview with ANI, describing the experience as one that continues to affect her family. She also spoke about the extraordinary strength shown by her mother, who was left to raise two young daughters after losing her husband.
Nimrat Kaur Was Only 11 When She Lost Her Father
Nimrat was a child when the tragedy happened. Her father, Major Bhupender Singh, was serving in Kashmir when he was abducted by people who, according to Nimrat's recollection, were posing as Army personnel and wearing army fatigues.
She said her father had been returning from an official assignment when he was taken away.
For the young Nimrat and her family, what followed was a terrifying seven-day period of uncertainty. According to her account, the abductors made several demands, including demands related to the release of people held in captivity in India.
‘I Saw My Father Leave For Work’
One of the most painful memories Nimrat shared was of the final time she saw her father alive.

She recalled seeing him leave for work that morning and then seeing him next in a coffin.
For Nimrat, that sudden transition meant that the family never received the kind of closure that can sometimes accompany a long illness or expected loss.
She explained that even though several decades have passed, the emotional impact has never completely disappeared for her, her mother, her sister or the rest of the family.
Her Father Spoke About His Family
Nimrat also recalled what she had learned about her father's final conversations with his captors.
According to her account, Major Bhupender Singh told them that he had a family and two daughters. Nimrat said knowing that her father was thinking about his family during his final moments remains deeply significant to her.
She said the knowledge has stayed with her over the years and remains part of how she remembers her father.
The Family Was In Kashmir At The Time
The tragedy became even more traumatic because Nimrat, her mother and her sister were in Kashmir during that period to visit Major Bhupender Singh.
Nimrat recalled that the family initially stayed in Verinag. As the situation became increasingly unsafe, they were moved to Srinagar.
On the seventh day, the family received the devastating news that Major Bhupender Singh had been killed.
The experience left a permanent mark on the family and changed the course of their lives.
Nimrat Praises Her Mother’s Strength
A major part of Nimrat’s latest recollection focuses on her mother.
At the time of her husband's death, Nimrat's mother was only in her early to mid-30s. Suddenly, she had to raise two young daughters while dealing with the loss of her husband.
Nimrat said her mother found the courage to rebuild their lives because she recognised that her daughters still had their entire futures ahead of them.
The actress described her mother's ability to rebuild the family as extraordinary and said she did not know many women who could have handled such a situation single-handedly with the same dignity.
The Family Eventually Moved To Noida
Following Major Bhupender Singh’s death, Nimrat, her mother and her sister moved to Noida, where her maternal grandparents lived.
The move marked the beginning of a new chapter for the family after the tragedy.
Nimrat's mother took responsibility for raising both daughters, while relatives, particularly from the maternal side, also provided support during the difficult period.
Major Bhupender Singh Was Later Honoured
Major Bhupender Singh was posthumously awarded the Shaurya Chakra.
Nimrat has continued to remember her father and his service. On the anniversary of his death, she has also shared emotional tributes recalling his courage, values and sacrifice.
Her memories of him therefore extend beyond the circumstances of his death. For Nimrat, he remains a father whose values and example continue to influence her life.
‘Nothing Quite Repairs That’
Nimrat's latest comments also highlight how grief can remain present even after many years.
She acknowledged that, technically, several decades have passed since her father's death. Yet she said the passage of time has not completely repaired the loss.
For her family, the tragedy remains a part of their personal history. The actress said the pain continues to exist for her mother, sister and herself, even after all these years.
A Childhood Changed Forever
Nimrat Kaur's story offers a deeply personal glimpse into the impact that the loss of a parent can have on a child.
She was only 11 when she lost her father, and the experience became one of the defining events of her childhood. Her memories of watching him leave for work and later seeing him in a coffin remain particularly painful.
At the same time, Nimrat's recollection is also a tribute to her mother, who rebuilt the family while raising two daughters.
Nimrat Kaur Remembers Her Father
Known for films such as The Lunchbox and Airlift, Nimrat Kaur has built a successful career in Hindi cinema and international projects. But behind the actor's professional journey is a deeply personal family story that she has rarely discussed at such length.
Her latest recollection of Major Bhupender Singh brings attention to a loss that occurred more than 30 years ago but remains emotionally significant.
For Nimrat, remembering her father is not only about revisiting tragedy. It is also about remembering his service, his values and the strength of the family he left behind.
