Nikki Walia Reveals Why She Quit Bollywood: “Women Were Objectified”

Veteran actress Nikki Walia has opened up about a major decision that once shocked the Hindi film industry. At a time when she was already making her presence felt in Bollywood, the actress chose to step away from films and build a career in television. Years later, Nikki has revealed that the decision was influenced not only by personal circumstances but also by the culture and behaviour she experienced around women in the film industry.

Known for films such as Mr. Azaad, Akele Hum Akele Tum and Pardesi Babu, Nikki eventually became a familiar face on television, particularly after starring in the popular show Astitva...Ek Prem Kahani. In a recent conversation with Zoom, she recalled why she decided to leave Bollywood and why speaking honestly about her experience brought its own set of problems.

Nikki Walia Says Bollywood’s Culture Did Not Suit Her

Nikki Walia’s comments offer a glimpse into the working environment she experienced during the early phase of her career. According to the actress, it was not simply the demands being placed on women that made her uncomfortable. She was also disturbed by the way some people spoke about women when they were around them.

Nikki recalled hearing casual and disrespectful conversations in which women were spoken about as objects rather than professionals. She said the experience was shocking because she was often sitting around the same people and hearing these conversations firsthand.

The actress made it clear that she does not claim the entire industry was either right or wrong. Instead, she said her own personality and values simply did not fit with the environment she encountered.

That difference eventually became an important factor in her decision to leave.

Why Did Nikki Walia Quit Bollywood?

At the time, Nikki’s decision to walk away from films surprised people. According to her, journalists and magazines approached her wanting to know why an actress who had worked with established stars would voluntarily leave the industry.

There were also rumours about alleged differences on the sets of Mr. Azaad. Nikki, however, said she had left films for personal reasons, rather than because of the rumours circulating about her career.

Her decision was followed by considerable backlash. Nikki recalled feeling that people were worried she might reveal uncomfortable details about the industry after writing openly about her experiences.

She said she knew she was not lying and had not falsely dragged anyone’s name into the controversy. That gave her the confidence to stand by what she had said.

Her Father’s Advice Changed Her Thinking

Nikki also remembered the advice given to her by her late father, Narayan Aneja. According to the actress, he told her that she was not made for the film industry.

His death later made Nikki feel more alone in the industry. She explained that while her father was alive, being known as Narayan Aneja’s daughter offered her a certain sense of respect and security. After his death, she felt that protective presence was gone.

That became another reason for her to seriously consider leaving Bollywood.

Nikki eventually decided that she wanted to leave after speaking her truth. Interestingly, she said that once she moved into television, people did not dare question her about the same issues in the way they had in films.

Television Gave Nikki Walia a New Identity

Leaving Bollywood did not mean the end of Nikki Walia’s acting career. In fact, television eventually gave her some of her most recognisable work.

She appeared in popular shows including Astitva...Ek Prem Kahani, Ghar Ek Sapnaa and Dil Sambhal Jaa Zara. Her role in Astitva helped establish her as a household name among television audiences.

Her journey also challenges the old perception that moving from films to television represents a step backwards. For Nikki, television became a space where she could continue acting while staying closer to the kind of professional environment she was comfortable with.

Nikki Says Respect Mattered More Than Bollywood Success

Looking back, Nikki Walia appears to have no regrets about the decision. She has previously said that she takes pride in leaving at a point when she was still doing well rather than waiting until opportunities disappeared.

Her latest comments add another layer to that decision. For Nikki, professional success was not enough if it came at the cost of her comfort, dignity or values.

Today, the actress remains remembered for both her film appearances and her television career. Her decision to leave Bollywood may have surprised the industry decades ago, but her latest revelations suggest that it was a carefully considered choice.
