Nana Patekar’s The Confession of Mary Producer Recalls Last Conversation

Nana Patekar’s sudden death at 75 has left the film industry stunned. The producer of his upcoming film The Confession of Mary has recalled speaking to the veteran actor shortly before his death and said Nana sounded completely healthy while discussing the film’s Toronto screening and future plans.

Nana Patekar’s sudden death has left the Indian film industry struggling to come to terms with the loss of one of its most distinctive performers. The veteran actor passed away in Goa on October 8, 2026, at the age of 75 after suffering a cardiac arrest. While tributes continue to pour in from across the country, those who worked with him are also remembering their final conversations with the actor.

Among them is producer Shreyans Hirawat, associated with Nana Patekar’s upcoming film The Confession of Mary. Hirawat revealed that he had spoken to Nana only around a week or two before his death. What makes the memory particularly difficult is that Nana reportedly sounded absolutely healthy during their conversation.

The producer said they were discussing the film’s screening at the Toronto International Film Festival and even talked about the possibility of making a sequel to the 1993 classic Tirangaa.

Nana Patekar Sounded Completely Healthy

According to Shreyans Hirawat, there was nothing during their last conversation that suggested Nana Patekar was facing any serious health issue. The actor was reportedly engaged in discussions about his professional commitments and future projects.

The sudden nature of his death has therefore made the news even harder for people close to him to process. Nana was still actively associated with several films and had work lined up when he passed away.

The producer’s recollection also shows that Nana remained enthusiastic about cinema until the final phase of his life. Rather than discussing retirement or stepping away from films, he was reportedly talking about upcoming screenings and possible future collaborations.

The Confession of Mary Was Among Nana Patekar’s Final Projects

The Confession of Mary holds special significance because it is among the projects Nana Patekar completed before his death. The film has been directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Ananth Narayan Mahadevan and features Nana alongside actors including Adil Hussain, Ashish Vidyarthi, Gautam Rode, Joy Sengupta and others.

The film is based on the 1966 murder of Mariyakkutty, a Catholic woman whose death led to a priest being accused and sentenced to death before he was eventually acquitted and released.

The project is expected to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, giving audiences an opportunity to see one of Nana’s final performances on the international stage.

Nana Patekar Still Had Pending Work on the Film

Another emotional detail emerged after Nana’s death when co-producer Subhash Kale recalled his final conversation with the actor. Kale said they had spoken just two days before Nana’s passing regarding the film’s dubbing.

According to Kale, only one line remained for Nana to dub. The actor had reportedly told him that he would come to Mumbai the following day and complete the remaining work. He also had another shoot scheduled in Mumbai.

The fact that Nana was preparing to return to Mumbai and finish his professional commitments makes his sudden passing even more poignant.

Kale also remembered the actor beyond the film set. He said that whenever Nana came to Mumbai, he would call him and visit the studio. They would spend time talking, joking and even singing songs together.

Nana Patekar Had Several Films Still to Release

Although The Confession of Mary is being discussed as one of Nana Patekar’s final films, it is not the only project featuring the late actor that audiences are yet to see.

Several completed or substantially completed projects remain lined up for release, including Eetha, Shakti Shalini, Kuku Ki Kundali and Vedanta.

Eetha, which also stars Shraddha Kapoor and Randeep Hooda, is a biographical project, while Shakti Shalini is a horror-comedy featuring Aneet Padda and Vishal Jethwa. Kuku Ki Kundali stars Bhuvan Bam and Wamiqa Gabbi and is directed by Sharan Sharma.

This means Nana Patekar’s presence on the big screen will continue even after his death, allowing audiences to discover and remember his performances through his remaining work.

Nana Patekar’s Final Chapter Was Still Full of Cinema

Nana Patekar’s death marks the end of a remarkable career spanning theatre, Marathi cinema, parallel cinema and mainstream Bollywood. He made his film debut with Gaman in 1978 and went on to deliver memorable performances in films such as Parinda, Prahaar, Krantiveer, Tirangaa, Khamoshi: The Musical, Ab Tak Chhappan and Welcome.

Even in his seventies, Nana continued accepting challenging roles and remained professionally active. His conversations about The Confession of Mary, its international screening and possible future projects show that his passion for cinema remained strong.

Nana Patekar’s Legacy Will Continue on Screen

For fans, The Confession of Mary will now carry an additional emotional significance. Every scene featuring Nana Patekar will be watched knowing that it represents one of the final chapters of an extraordinary acting career.

The memories shared by the film’s producers also paint a picture of an actor who was still energetic, involved and thinking about his next piece of work shortly before his death.
