Nana Patekar Played Cricket With Sunil Gavaskar, But Why Did He Quit the Sport?

Nana Patekar was not just a celebrated actor but also a passionate cricketer in his younger days. He played at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park, where Sunil Gavaskar also played, before an injury and family responsibilities changed his path.

Nana Patekar is remembered as one of Indian cinema's most powerful actors, but there was another side to his personality that many people may not know. Long before he became a celebrated name in Bollywood and Marathi cinema, Nana had a strong connection with cricket.

The veteran actor played cricket during his younger years at Mumbai's iconic Shivaji Park, a ground that has produced several legendary cricketers. Interestingly, Sunil Gavaskar, whom Nana considered one of his biggest inspirations, also played at the same ground.

Nana's cricket journey did not ultimately turn into a professional career. An injury to his finger, combined with the need to support his parents financially, forced him to move away from the sport. Years later, however, cricket remained one of his biggest passions, and his admiration for Gavaskar continued throughout his life.

Nana Patekar Played at the Same Ground as Sunil Gavaskar

Nana had recalled in an interview that he started playing cricket at around the age of 13. Shivaji Park was an important cricketing hub in Mumbai, and several youngsters who later went on to play at the highest level trained there.

Nana was among those young cricket enthusiasts. He also remembered sharing the ground with Sandeep Patil, who was younger than him and eventually became a prominent Indian batsman.

The connection with Sunil Gavaskar made the story even more interesting. Nana recalled that Gavaskar also played at the same ground. For a young cricket lover, being around an environment that produced future international players was undoubtedly significant.

However, Nana's circumstances were different from those of youngsters who could devote themselves completely to professional cricket. His family faced financial difficulties, and he eventually had to think about earning a livelihood and supporting his parents.

Why Did Nana Patekar Quit Cricket?

The biggest turning point in Nana's cricket journey came when he suffered an injury to his finger. The injury affected his ability to continue playing and eventually contributed to his decision to leave cricket.

However, the injury was not the only reason. Nana had also spoken about his responsibility towards his parents. He needed to work and contribute financially to his family, which made pursuing cricket professionally increasingly difficult.

According to his own account, these circumstances forced him to make a practical decision. Rather than continuing to chase a possible cricket career, Nana moved towards education and eventually found his way into the arts.

That decision changed the course of Indian cinema. Had the circumstances been different, Nana Patekar might have followed a completely different professional path.

Nana Patekar Considered Sunil Gavaskar His Role Model

Even after leaving cricket, Nana's admiration for Sunil Gavaskar never disappeared. In fact, Gavaskar became more than just a cricketing hero for him.

Nana once explained that he considered Gavaskar his role model even in acting. He admired the legendary batsman's concentration and ability to remain completely focused during a game.

For Nana, Gavaskar demonstrated what concentration really meant. He believed that the discipline and focus Gavaskar displayed while batting were qualities that could also be applied to acting.

In an interview, Nana reportedly said that Gavaskar taught him through his cricket how to concentrate, which was one reason he considered him an acting role model.

The admiration eventually developed into a personal friendship. Nana said he and Gavaskar continued to meet several times a year and enjoyed spending time together.

Cricket Remained Nana Patekar’s Lifelong Passion

Leaving cricket professionally did not mean Nana stopped following the sport. He remained an enthusiastic cricket fan for decades.

His passion extended beyond his childhood memories of Shivaji Park. He closely followed Indian cricket and also admired modern stars.

Virat Kohli was among the players Nana particularly liked. Reports recalling his cricket obsession say Nana could become so emotionally invested in Kohli's performances that an early dismissal could affect his mood and even his appetite.

This showed that cricket was not simply a childhood hobby for Nana. It remained an important part of his life even after he became one of India's most respected actors.

Nana Patekar Wanted to Host the 1983 World Cup Team

Nana's love for cricket continued into his later years. He reportedly had a special wish connected to India's historic 1983 World Cup-winning team.

The actor had a farmhouse near Pune and wanted members of the 1983 World Cup squad to come together there, stay overnight and spend time discussing cricket.

Nana had spoken about meeting Sunil Gavaskar and former cricketer Mohinder Amarnath regularly. He reportedly wanted the members of the 1983 team to spend time together at his farmhouse, creating an informal reunion away from the usual public spotlight.

Sadly, his sudden death at the age of 75 means that this particular wish remained unfulfilled.

From Shivaji Park to Indian Cinema

Nana's journey from cricket to acting is one of the more fascinating chapters of his life. A finger injury and family responsibilities may have ended his cricket ambitions, but they ultimately pushed him towards another form of performance.

After leaving cricket, he enrolled in an art college and eventually moved towards theatre. His talent and distinctive personality soon helped him establish himself as an actor.

He made his film debut with Gaman in 1978 and went on to deliver acclaimed performances in Parinda, Prahaar, Krantiveer, Agni Sakshi, Khamoshi, Ab Tak Chhappan and Natsamrat. He also became hugely popular with mainstream audiences through films such as Welcome.

Nana Patekar’s Cricket Story Adds Another Dimension to His Legacy

Nana Patekar's cricket story offers a different perspective on the actor remembered for his intense performances and unmistakable voice. He once dreamed of playing cricket, shared the Shivaji Park environment with future stars and admired Sunil Gavaskar throughout his life.

Although circumstances prevented him from becoming a professional cricketer, his passion for the sport never disappeared. Cricket remained a constant in his life, from his childhood days at Shivaji Park to his friendships with former cricketers and his enthusiastic support for modern Indian stars.

His journey ultimately took him from the cricket ground to the theatre stage and then to the big screen. Indian cinema gained one of its most memorable performers, while Nana Patekar carried his love for cricket with him throughout his life.
