Bollywood News: Mika Singh is now recognised as one of the most popular singers in Bollywood and Punjabi music, known for energetic tracks, party anthems and successful live performances. However, his journey to the top began with modest earnings and a determination to establish his own identity in the music industry.
In a recent conversation on the YouTube channel Kapil Sibal Dil Se, Mika revisited the early stages of his career, recalling how he earned just ₹500 per show while performing with his elder brother Daler Mehndi’s group. He also explained how his hit song “Sawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag” changed his professional life and how he approached opportunities in Bollywood with confidence.
1. From Earning ₹500 to Building a Successful Music Career
Before becoming an established playback singer, Mika performed alongside Daler Mehndi and gained experience on stage. According to his recollection, he earned around ₹500 per show during that period.
His career took a significant turn after “Sawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag” became a hit in 1998. The song helped him gain recognition and opened up more opportunities for live performances.
Mika revealed that his earnings increased to approximately ₹10,000 per show following the song’s success. The change marked an important step in his journey, giving him greater financial independence and allowing him to explore new professional opportunities.
Interestingly, Mika explained that he initially wanted to become a music director rather than a singer. He had written “Sawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag” himself, and its popularity helped establish him as a performer.
The song became a turning point that encouraged him to pursue singing more seriously, even though becoming a playback singer had not originally been his primary ambition.
2. Mika Singh’s Hummer Strategy Surprised the Music Industry
One of the most unusual parts of Mika’s story concerns his luxury Hummer. When he began looking for opportunities in Bollywood around 2006, he already had financial success from his Punjabi music career and could afford an expensive vehicle.
However, he was still trying to establish himself in the Hindi film industry.
Mika recalled that singer Shaan advised him not to arrive at meetings with producers and music composers in his Hummer. The concern was that industry professionals might assume he was already wealthy and therefore did not need work as much as an aspiring singer.
Instead, Shaan reportedly suggested that Mika travel by auto-rickshaw so that producers would recognise his need for opportunities.
Mika chose a different approach. He continued using his Hummer, believing that arriving in an expensive car could create the impression that he was already a successful artist.
He explained that his intention was to build a larger-than-life image, even while he was still trying to secure more work in Bollywood.
The strategy reflected his confidence and willingness to take a different route from other aspiring singers. Whether such an approach would work for everyone is another question, but Mika believed it suited his personality and ambitions at the time.
3. How Mika Singh Got His First Song With Pritam
Mika also recalled an interesting incident involving music composer Pritam, who later became associated with several popular Hindi film soundtracks.
During their first meeting, Mika admitted that he had not known what Pritam looked like. Because he had heard Hindi film songs with Punjabi influences, he had assumed that the composer might be a Sikh man named Pritam Singh.
During their conversation, Pritam asked Mika to return the following day to record a song. Mika, however, deliberately avoided appearing immediately available.
He explained that he did not want the composer to think he had no other work. Instead of agreeing to record the next day, he said he was busy and arranged to come later.
That decision eventually led to his association with the song “Dil Mein Baji Guitar”, featured in the film Apna Sapna Money Money.
The track became one of Mika’s recognisable Bollywood songs and helped strengthen his position in the Hindi film industry.
His recollection shows how he tried to manage his professional image while looking for opportunities, although the outcome ultimately depended on his musical ability and the opportunities offered to him.
Mika Singh’s Journey Beyond His Early Struggles
Over the years, Mika has built a career that extends beyond playback singing. He has performed at live shows, released independent music and appeared on television programmes.
His popular tracks include “Mauja Hi Mauja”, “Bas Ek Kinng”, “Ganpat”, “Jumme Ki Raat” and “Subha Hone Na De”. These songs have helped establish his energetic musical identity across Bollywood and Punjabi entertainment.
His journey also highlights the role of persistence in a competitive industry. Early success in Punjabi music helped him financially, but he still had to find his place in Bollywood and develop relationships with composers and filmmakers.
Mika’s experience demonstrates that entering a new professional space can require a different strategy, even after achieving success elsewhere.
A Career Built on Confidence and Opportunity
Mika Singh’s recollections reveal three important moments in his journey: the success of “Sawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag”, his decision to continue driving his Hummer while seeking work, and the circumstances surrounding his first song with Pritam.
From earning ₹500 per performance to becoming a familiar voice in Hindi cinema, his career has evolved through musical success, live shows and a willingness to take risks.
His story offers a glimpse into the less visible side of the entertainment industry, where talent, persistence, networking and personal choices can all influence a singer’s career.
