Manoj Bajpayee Plays Mahatma Gandhi, Loses 10 Kg for Sudhir Mishra Film

Manoj Bajpayee’s first look as Mahatma Gandhi is out. The actor has reportedly lost 10 kg for Sudhir Mishra’s historical film, now being shot in Lucknow

The Manoj Bajpayee Mahatma Gandhi look from Sudhir Mishra’s upcoming historical film has been revealed, giving audiences the first glimpse of the actor as the Father of the Nation. Bajpayee appears in a white dhoti, round glasses and carries a walking stick, while his body language has also been adapted for the role. Reports say the actor has lost around 10 kg for the part.

The film focuses on a 21-day period from Mahatma Gandhi’s life around the time of India’s Independence. The project is being directed by Sudhir Mishra and backed by filmmaker-producer Anubhav Sinha. Shooting has already begun in Lucknow, where the production is recreating the period through locations, costumes, vintage cars and old-style signboards.

Manoj Bajpayee Mahatma Gandhi Transformation

Bajpayee’s transformation goes beyond the costume and makeup. The first-look photographs show the actor adopting Gandhi’s familiar appearance, including the simple white attire, glasses and walking stick. Reports also say that he has worked on Gandhi’s mannerisms and body language for the role.

According to Anubhav Sinha, Bajpayee has lost considerable weight and is currently following a restricted diet and a particular lifestyle while preparing for the character. The exact figure of 10 kg has been reported by NewsNation and other outlets, although the producer himself described the change as “considerable weight loss.”

For an actor taking on a historical personality as widely recognised as Gandhi, physical resemblance is only one part of the preparation. The challenge also lies in finding a believable voice, movement and screen presence without turning the portrayal into a simple imitation.

Sudhir Mishra's Gandhi Film Begins Shooting

Sudhir Mishra’s film has officially gone on floors in Lucknow. The first outdoor schedule began near Lucknow Zoo, where the team filmed a sequence involving a young girl and one of Gandhi’s public movements. The production has also recreated details from the 1940s to establish the period setting.

Vintage cars, period costumes and old-fashioned signboards are being used to give the locations a pre-Independence and early-Independence-era appearance. The Lucknow schedule is expected to continue until October, according to Anubhav Sinha.

Divya Dutta and Saurabh Shukla are also part of the cast. More details about their characters have not yet been disclosed.

The Story Covers 21 Days of Gandhi's Life

The makers have revealed that the film is built around a 21-day chapter from Gandhi’s life during the period surrounding India’s Independence.

Sudhir Mishra had earlier described the story as a lesser-known chapter from that period. According to the director, the film looks at Gandhi at a time when the country was moving towards freedom and explores the choices he made during those days.

Mishra also has a personal connection with the subject. He previously revealed that his mother, Durga Devendra Nath Mishra, had met Gandhi as a child. Their conversations about Gandhi stayed with the filmmaker, and he later promised his mother that he would make a film about him. She died in 2022.

The director eventually developed the screenplay around a later chapter of Gandhi’s life.

Anubhav Sinha Backs the Historical Project

Anubhav Sinha is producing the film and is collaborating with Sudhir Mishra again after Afwaah (2023). Sinha is known for films including Mulk, Article 15, Thappad and Bheed.

The producer has also provided one of the few updates about Bajpayee’s preparation. He said the actor is currently in what he called the “Gandhi zone”, following a restricted diet and a specific lifestyle while the shoot continues.

The film is currently being referred to by the working title Gandhi and My Mother. However, the title has not been finalised. Sinha has confirmed that the team is working on a new title.

First Look Creates Curiosity Around Bajpayee's Performance

The first look has drawn attention mainly because of the physical change and Bajpayee’s resemblance to Gandhi. His appearance in the white dhoti, glasses and with a walking stick is noticeably different from many of his recent screen roles.

The actor has played several real-life personalities and complex characters during his career, but Mahatma Gandhi presents a different kind of challenge because of the historical figure’s familiarity to Indian audiences.

The film also gives Sudhir Mishra an opportunity to approach Gandhi through a specific period rather than attempting to cover his entire life. The makers have so far kept the wider plot details under wraps.

With shooting now underway in Lucknow, further information about the final title, complete cast and release plans is expected as production progresses.

For Manoj Bajpayee Mahatma Gandhi, the transformation is already attracting attention before the film has revealed much about its story. The reported 10 kg weight loss, period styling and attention to Gandhi’s mannerisms suggest that the actor has made physical preparation a major part of his approach to the role. The performance itself will become clearer once more footage from the film is released.
