Dr Shriram Nene, cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon and husband of Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit, has spoken candidly about his weight-loss journey and experiments with different diets. During a recent discussion at Masters’ Union University, he revealed how a challenge from one of his patients prompted him to try the Atkins diet, leading to dramatic weight loss but also some unexpected health difficulties.

Nene, who has worked in medicine and now also focuses on healthcare innovation and investment, explained that his experiences taught him how challenging it can be to find a sustainable eating plan. He also spoke about trying a vegan diet and the digestive discomfort that followed, describing the experience humorously as becoming a “gas bomb.”
How a Patient Challenged Dr Shriram Nene to Lose Weight
Recalling the beginning of his experiment, Nene described treating a woman who needed an aortic valve replacement. According to him, the patient weighed approximately 90 kilograms and was around four feet nine inches tall.
While discussing the operation, Nene explained that her weight could create complications during surgery, particularly when closing the sternum. He advised her to lose some weight, but the patient responded by challenging him to follow his own advice.
The exchange prompted Nene to suggest that they try the Atkins diet together. The eating plan is known for its emphasis on protein and fat while restricting carbohydrate intake.
Nene decided to participate in the experiment alongside his patient. He later recalled that the approach produced a substantial change in his body weight, although the experience was not without drawbacks.
Dr Nene Reveals He Lost 158 Pounds
Speaking about the results, Nene said he lost a considerable amount of weight and reached 158 pounds. That figure is approximately 71.7 kilograms, although it refers to his weight at that point rather than the total amount he lost.
He recalled that some of the nurses working with him became concerned because he appeared unusually thin. They even asked whether something was wrong with his health.
Despite the visible change, Nene said he continued the diet because he had committed to the experiment with his patient. He added that the woman also lost a significant amount of weight and subsequently underwent the planned valve replacement operation successfully.
However, the high-protein, low-carbohydrate approach eventually became difficult for him to maintain. Nene reported experiencing severe muscle cramps and struggling with everyday activities such as climbing stairs.
He explained that the diet allowed him to consume high-fat foods as long as he kept his carbohydrate intake low. Over time, however, the physical discomfort led him to discontinue the plan.
Why Dr Nene Tried a Vegan Diet
Nene has also experimented with veganism as part of his broader interest in nutrition and lifestyle changes. A vegan diet excludes meat, fish, dairy products, eggs and other animal-derived foods.
While discussing his experience, he said the transition brought unexpected digestive problems. His humorous description of becoming a “gas bomb” reflected the discomfort he experienced rather than suggesting that vegan diets have the same effects on everyone.
A sudden increase in dietary fibre from foods such as beans, lentils, vegetables and whole grains can cause gas and bloating in some people. Gradually increasing fibre intake and maintaining adequate hydration may help, although individual responses vary.
Nene’s account illustrates that changing eating habits can involve an adjustment period and that a diet that works for one person may not suit another.
Dr Nene Says Doctors Can Be Difficult Patients
During the discussion, Nene also reflected on the challenges doctors face when managing their own health. He observed that medical professionals can sometimes make difficult patients because their familiarity with illness and emergencies may influence how they approach their personal well-being.
His comments highlighted the difference between understanding medical science and consistently applying healthy habits in everyday life.
Nene’s willingness to experiment with different dietary approaches also reflects his interest in understanding how nutrition and lifestyle can influence health. However, his personal experiences should not be interpreted as medical recommendations for others.
Restrictive diets can carry risks if they do not provide sufficient energy or essential nutrients. Anyone considering a major dietary change should take their individual health needs into account and seek professional guidance when appropriate.
Madhuri Dixit and Dr Nene’s Life Beyond Bollywood
Dr Shriram Nene married Madhuri Dixit in 1999. While Madhuri has remained one of Hindi cinema’s most recognisable stars, Nene built his career in medicine before becoming involved in healthcare innovation and investment.
The couple have two sons and occasionally share glimpses of their family life and interests with their followers.
Nene also uses digital platforms to discuss health, fitness and wellness, making medical information more accessible to a wider audience.
His latest account of weight-loss experiments offers a personal perspective on the challenges of changing long-established habits. From the dramatic results of the Atkins diet to the digestive discomfort he experienced while going vegan, Nene’s story underscores the importance of finding a balanced and sustainable approach to nutrition rather than relying on extreme dietary restrictions.
