Juhi Chawla Jay Mehta Wedding: Why She Cancelled a 2,000-Guest Celebration

Juhi Chawla once revealed the emotional story behind her 1995 wedding to businessman Jay Mehta. Despite nearly 2,000 invitations being sent out, her mother-in-law cancelled the grand celebration after Juhi broke down and the couple eventually married in an intimate ceremony at home.

Bollywood actress Juhi Chawla has always maintained a relatively private personal life, especially when it comes to her marriage to businessman Jay Mehta. The couple tied the knot in 1995, when Juhi was among the leading actresses in Hindi cinema.

Years later, Juhi revealed that her wedding was originally planned as a lavish celebration with around 2,000 guests. However, the grand ceremony was eventually cancelled after the actress became emotionally overwhelmed. Her mother-in-law stepped in, persuaded the family to change the plans and helped turn the wedding into a small gathering at home.

Why Did Juhi Chawla Cancel Her Grand Wedding?

Juhi shared the emotional story during an interaction organised by the Gujarat Chamber of Commerce & Industry. At the time of her wedding, she was at the peak of her film career and was also dealing with the loss of her mother.

According to Juhi, her mother had passed away about a year before the wedding. As the marriage date approached, the actress found herself struggling emotionally. She was not only grieving her mother but was also worried that marriage might affect her flourishing Bollywood career.

Juhi recalled that she did not know how to feel happy about the wedding and eventually broke down in front of her mother-in-law.

Her Mother-in-Law Took a Major Decision

The situation could have been complicated because wedding invitations had already been sent to a large number of people.

Juhi revealed that approximately 2,000 invitations had gone out around the world. Instead of insisting on continuing with the elaborate celebration, her mother-in-law reportedly understood her emotional state and convinced the family to cancel the big wedding.

The decision dramatically changed the scale of the ceremony. Rather than hosting thousands of guests, Juhi and Jay got married at home in the presence of family members and close friends. Reports based on Juhi’s account put the final gathering at roughly 80–100 people.

Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta Got Married in 1995

Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta eventually married in an intimate ceremony in 1995. Their relationship had developed away from the intense public attention that surrounded Juhi's Bollywood career.

The couple were reportedly introduced through common connections, including filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, and gradually developed a relationship. Juhi has previously spoken about Jay's efforts to win her over, including a memorable gesture involving a truck full of red roses.

She once recalled that Jay would write letters to her during their courtship and that she took nearly a year before saying yes to him.

From Love Letters to a Long Marriage

The couple's relationship has lasted for more than three decades. Juhi and Jay have two children, daughter Jhanvi Mehta and son Arjun Mehta.

Juhi has occasionally shared amusing details about their relationship. She once joked that the romantic letters exchanged during their courtship eventually gave way to emails and WhatsApp messages after marriage.

Their relationship has largely remained away from constant media attention, with both Juhi and Jay maintaining a relatively private family life.

Jay Mehta’s Life Away From Bollywood

While Juhi Chawla became one of the most recognisable faces of 1990s Hindi cinema, Jay Mehta comes from the business world. He is associated with the Mehta Group and has maintained a considerably lower public profile than his actor wife.

Jay has also been associated with the Kolkata Knight Riders, alongside Juhi Chawla and Shah Rukh Khan, giving the couple another connection to India's entertainment and sports industries.

Despite their different professional backgrounds, Juhi and Jay have maintained a long-standing marriage away from the usual Bollywood spotlight.

Juhi Chawla’s Career Continued After Marriage

One of the fears Juhi experienced before her wedding was that marriage could bring her successful film career to an end. However, that concern did not become reality.

She continued appearing in films after marrying Jay Mehta and remained active in the entertainment industry. Her filmography includes popular titles such as Darr, Yes Boss, Ishq, Deewana Mastana and Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke.

Her career eventually expanded beyond acting, while her personal life remained comparatively private.

A Wedding Story About Family Support

The story of Juhi Chawla and Jay Mehta’s wedding stands out not because of its scale, but because the original grand celebration was transformed into an intimate family ceremony.

What began as a wedding planned for nearly 2,000 guests ultimately became a small gathering of close relatives and friends after Juhi's emotional struggle was understood by her family. Her mother-in-law's decision to put Juhi's well-being ahead of the elaborate arrangements became one of the most memorable parts of the actress's wedding story.

More than 30 years later, the story continues to attract attention because it offers a rare glimpse into the private side of one of Bollywood's most enduring celebrity marriages.
